COMMENTARY

Now that first-years have spent their first week in Oberlin, we felt the need to find out their first impression of life in "The Bubble"

Trish Hinrichs:
It's a lot better than high school. The teachers are a lot more attentive to students' needs. Lots of intellectual energy flows through classes.

Alex Zorach:
The people here are more intelligent and mature than they are in the real world. There are seemingly unlimited resources available. There is so much music here on campus. Without respect to registration, I've encountered a very low amount of bullshit.

Emily Ravich:
It's been fun, kinda hectic, and kind of confusing. The people I've met are pretty nutty, and that has brought out the nut in me.

Chloe Maher:
Oberlin is a really nice place, and students and staff, especially new students, are really friendly. I'm lucky to be in East, which is a great hall. The Con is a little bit intimidating though.

Leah Freedman:
Well, I got lucky with registration, unlike a lot of other people who got screwed over. My favorite class so far has been Western Art History, because it was the only one where I actually learned something. I don't really know what is the purpose of the first day of classes. I would have rather received my syllabi by mail. I really like the people I've met so far, though it's gotten to the point where I don't remember where I met a girl or what we even talked about. Her face is somewhat familiar, and that's the only way I know I met her.

Katie McGlone:
People in general have been really friendly. It's comforting that people are willing to help with almost everything. I really appreciated the help moving in and the help with registration. Conversations are very much on the intellectual level, which is something you don't normally see in high school. Everybody has something to say.

Jay Goss:
I come from the Boston area and I was surprised by how flat it is here. So far I've had a lot of fun, with the exception of registration. So far that's been the only bad part of this week.
