Capital Campaign to officially begin

by Benjamin Clark

Finally will expectations be realized when the College officially announces its $165 million capital campaign. The five-year campaign, promptly titled "The New Oberlin Century," will be announced Tuesday.

The campaign is no secret to the Oberlin community. Administrators have openly discussed the campaign for over two years and have already netted $58 million in advanced fundraising from committed and deep-pocketed supporters of Oberlin. College President Nancy Dye said, "We have surpassed what we expected to raise at this point." Tuesday's announcement will usher in the public phase of the campaign.

The campaign funds wills be directed towards faculty salaries, student scholarships and significant building renovations. Some of the funds will be spent on the new science center in North Quad.

The "New Oberlin Century" will be chaired by Thomas J. Klutznick, OC '61, Joan L. Danforth and William L. Robinson, OC '63. The committee eagerly accepts the challenges of Oberlin's largest ever fundraising effort. Klutznick drew welcomed attention to himself when he cut a $5 million check for the campaign.

Along with a 16-member staff devoted solely to raising funds for the campaign and Campaign Director John Hays, President Nancy Dye and Director of Development Kay Thompson logged a fair share of frequent flier miles last year in soliciting donations all over the world. Dye will continue to push the campaign in further travels as the college encroaches upon the public phase of the campaign.
