Security Notebook


The following is a compilation of weekly reports from the Office of Safety and Security.

Sept. 9, 9:20 a.m. An officer responded to a report from a staff member of damage to landscaping and a tree on the west side of the Oberlin Inn. On September 8, 1999 at appoximately 5:15 p.m. a vehicle jumped a parking barrier, striking several shrubs and uprooting a tree. Damage was estimated at $1,100. The incident is being investigated by the Oberlin Police Department and Safety and Security.

Sept. 9, 11:45 a.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in first floor of Keep. The alarm was caused by cooking without the exhaust fans on.

Sept. 9, 3:00 p.m. An officer responded to a report from a student of a theft of a bicycle from the bike rack at South Hall. The bicycle is a yellow 10 speed. Make, model, serial number and value of the bike are known. The bicycle was not locked at the time of theft.

Sept. 10, 11:00 a.m. An officer responded to a report from a student of the theft of a bicycle from King Building. On September 11, the student reported she recovered her bicycle in front of Mudd Library.

Sept. 10, 11:30 a.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in first floor of Asia House. The alarm was caused by dust from contractors working in the area.

Sept. 10, 11:30 a.m. An officer responded to a report from a resident of South Hall of the theft of a green and blue wallet and cookie tin from her room. The room was left unlocked at the time of theft. On September 12, the student reported she recovered her wallet from another student's room, where she had left it.

Sept. 10, 11:35 a.m. Officer responded to a report from a resident of Kade of the theft of a French Horn from the lounge. The horn is a nickel plated, Yamaha, with detachable bell, scratched with several dents, valued at $800.

Sept. 10, 4:19 p.m. An officer discovered vandalism to the vending machine in Zechiel House. The front glass panel was shattered, scattering glass inside the machine and on the floor. The contents appeared to be intact. The vending company and Oberlin Police Department were notified.

Sept. 11, 6:07 p.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in the west basement of Asia House. The alarm was caused by cooking without the exhaust fans on.

Sept. 11, 7:50 p.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in the basement of Harkness. The alarm caused by steam from hot water.

Sept. 11, 11:28 p.m. An officer responded to a report from a student of a harrassing email from an unknown sender with a Yahoo mail account. The report is being investigated.
