Volleyball falls to Ohio North.

by April Wynn

The Oberlin College volleyball team is now at a rough spot in their season. After a very impressive start, they have fallen to all of their last three opponents. Currently, their record stands at a modest 4-4 - which is still an improvement from last year's 3-win season total.

The Yeowomen's most recent effort was not a crowd - or team- pleaser. The ladies fell to Ohio Northern University in straight games 1-15, 2-15, 6-15, although the scores do not reflect the bright performances of the night.

In the first game, Ohio Northern scored 11 straight unanswered points. Oberlin improved in the second game scoring first off a very nice serve by sophomore Alana Kenmore. But soon after, the team lost the spark and Ohio Northern again won in a romp. Photo of volleyball players

The team was determined to show a much more competitive spirit in the third game. The Yeowomen again scored first off of first-year Mariana Padias' serve. During their next possesion, Oberlin scored three points in a row off the serves of junior captain Sarah Breon.

Sophomore Anna Ruth led the team in kills with a total of nine. She went on the finish the game with an impressive percentage of .438. On the defensive end Anna also had five digs. Kenmore was not far behind with a total of five kills and four digs. First-year setter Mariana Padia had 19 sets and six digs.

Kenmore addressed how quickly and effortlessly the team has gelled.

"We have come a long way and we need to maintain the level we know we can reach," she said.

The Yeowomen will need to maintain that level if they are to survive a very tough schedule ahead.

Today and Saturday the ladies travel to play in the

Muskingum tournament. They have a quick turnaround Tuesday at Marietta and then a a doubleheader at home next Saturday against Marietta and Wooster.

So come out to Phillips and make sure root for your Yeowomen.
