Security Notebook


The following is a compilation of weekly reports from the Office of Safety and Security.

Oct. 7, 4:30 p.m. An officer responded to report from student of the theft of a bicycle from Johnson House. The bicycle, a beige, All-Pro, women's 3 speed with a blue plastic covered chain lock, is valued at $40. The bicycle was not registered with the Oberlin Police Department and was not locked at time of theft.

Oct. 7, 8:30 p.m. An officer responded to report from student concerning a suspicious male in the area of the Conservatory. The male, 6', approximately 20 years of age, wearing dark pants, a red flannel shirt and a dark cap, was observed pulling on a bicycle causing the lock to break. He then climbed on the bike and headed west on College Street. Oberlin Police Department were notified.

Oct. 7, 2:05 p.m. An officer responded to a report from staff member of the theft of a fax machine from the Conservatory. The fax machine is a Brother, MFC1970 All In One, valued at $249.99. The theft is being investigated by the Oberlin Police Department and the Safety and Security Office.

Oct. 8, 1:34 p.m. An officer responded to a report from a student who had observed a suspicious white male, in his 40s, sitting in a light colored Ford pick-up truck taking pictures of an unidentified student as she walked down College Street. When the male taking the pictures realized he was being watched, he left the area. The Oberlin Police Department and the Safety and Security Office have the matter under investigation.

Oct. 8, 6:36 p.m. Safety and Security Officers and The Oberlin Fire Department units responded to a fire alarm on the third floor of Langston Hall. The cause of the alarm was steam from a shower.

Oct. 10, 7:24 p.m. An officer observed an unidentified male smoking marijuana near Langston Hall. When the man observed the officer, he left the area on a bicycle.

Oct. 14, 11:07 p.m. Safety and Security Officers and Oberlin Fire Department units responded to a fire alarm at the Oberlin Inn. Alarm station had been pulled by a juvenile.

Oct. 15, 4:35 p.m. An officer responded to report from a faculty member who had lost his keys somewhere in Tappan Square. On Oct. 16, the keys were located and returned to the owner.

Oct. 15, 7:37 p.m. An officer responded to report from a staff member at Stevenson of a student who had thrown an empty beer can into the dish room at Biggs Dining Hall. The student was described as a white male, black hair, wearing a t-shirt and blue jeans. A check of the area was made, but no one could be located.

Oct. 16, 10:11 p.m. Safety and Security Officers and The Oberlin Fire Department units responded to a fire alarm at Dascomb. The alarm was caused by smoke from baking.

Oct. 16, 2:30 p.m. An officer responded to report from a student of the theft of her bicycle from South Hall. The bicycle is a blue/green, men's, Mongoose mountain bike, unknown value, and was unlocked at time of theft. The bicycle is registered with the Oberlin Police Department.

Oct. 17, 2:20 p.m. An officer responded to report from a student LEC who had found the Pyle Coop kitchen, located in the basement of Asia House, unlocked. A check of the area was made and nothing appeared to be missing.

Oct. 17, 4:48 p.m. Safety and Security Officers and The Oberlin Fire Department units responded to a fire alarm at Baldwin. The alarm was caused by malfunctioning smoke detector.

Oct. 17, 10:25 p.m. Safety and Security Officers and the Oberlin Fire Department units responded to a fire alarm at Dascomb. The alarm was caused by malfunctioning smoke detector.

Oct. 21, 8:45 a.m. An officer complied with request from parent of a student to check up on the well being of their son. Contact was made and everything was okay.

Oct. 22, 10:16 a.m. Safety and Security Officers and the Oberlin Fire Department units responded to a fire alarm at South Hall. The alarm was caused by hot steam.

Oct. 21, 6:00 p.m. An officer responded to a report from a staff member at the Recreation Center of equipment in Hales Gym out of the storage area. Nothing appeared to be missing.

Oct. 22, 3:00 p.m. An officer responded to a report from the Grounds Department of lawn turfing on the west side of the Ice Rink. Damage was estimated at $600.

Oct. 22, 5:38 p.m. An officer responded to a student who had chipped his tooth after walking into a door in Mudd Library. The student did not require First Aid at the time.

Oct. 24, 3:18 p.m. An officer responded to report from a student of harassing emails from an acquaintance. Oberlin Police Department and the Safety and Security Office is investigating the incident.

Oct. 24, 7:15 p.m. An officer responded to report from a faculty member from Kettering of a magnetic advertising card stuck in her office door near the latch hole. It appeared someone unsuccessfully attempted to gain entry using the card. Nothing was missing from the office.

Oct. 24, 9:00 p.m. A student turned in U.S. and foreign currency found outside of Asia House. Anyone who believes he/she may have lost these items may inquire by contacting the Safety and Security Office at 159 West Lorain Street, 775-8444.

Oct. 25, 4:11 p.m. A staff member of the grounds department reported one international flag missing from the United Nations flag display in front of the Oberlin Inn. A pole was broken off and the flag removed. Oberlin Police Department was notified.

Oct. 25, 11:23 p.m. Safety and Security Officers and the Oberlin Fire Department units responded to a fire alarm at Oberlin Inn. The alarm was caused by cigarette smoke.

Oct. 26, 3:00 p.m. An officer responded to report from a student of spillage of a small amount of sulfuric acid on his hand while in class in Kettering. The student was transported to the hospital for treatment and released.

Oct. 26, 5:40 p.m. An officer responded to report from a student from Burton Hall of an unusual phone call from an unidentified male demanding to talk with a friend who will be visiting next week. The man demanded to speak with the prospective student several times and when told the person wasn't there, hung up. The Safety and Security Office and Oberlin Police Department are investigating the incident.
