Security Notebook


The following is a compilation of weekly reports from the Office of Safety and Security.

Oct. 26, 12:00 p.m. An officer received report from a parent who reported his son's cello missing from a locked storage room on campus. The cello is French made and approximately 100 years old. Four metal guitar type string adjusters were screwed on in place of the tuning pins and the holes from the pins have not been restored. The value of the cello is unknown.

Nov. 4, 11:50 a.m. An officer received report from a vending company employee of a counterfeit bill found in a vending machine at Peters Hall. The Safety and Security Office and Oberlin Police Department are investigating the incident.

Nov. 4, 6:50 p.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in Burton Hall. The alarm was caused by fumes sprayed from an aerosol can.

Nov. 4, 6:50 p.m. An officer responded to a staff member from Hales who reported a student worker injured her ankle when she tripped over a ramp at the Cat-in-the-Cream. The student was transported to Allen Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Nov. 4, 10:45 a.m. An officer responded to report from a student of the theft of his bicycle from East Hall approximately a month and a half ago. The bicycle, a red GT mountain bike, shocks on the front wheels, valued at $1060 was secured to the bike rack. The bike was not registered.

Nov. 4, 3:43 p.m. An officer responded to report from a student of the theft of her bicycle from the front yard of a North Main Street residence. The bicycle is a green Murray Loose, 15 speed, men's mountain bike with a black lock holder. The bike was not locked at the time of theft and is not registered.

Nov. 6, 2:11 a.m. An officer responded to request from student for assistance in checking on the well being of her friend in Dascomb. The student was found to be OK, sleeping in his room.

Nov. 6, 11:24 a.m. An officer received report from a taxi driver of a customer he dropped off at Stevenson Hall who did not pay the fare. The driver was asked to report the incident to the Oberlin Police.

Nov. 6, 1:57 a.m. An officer responded to report from a visitor on campus of her vehicle on fire on Professor Street. Safety and Security officers and Obelrin Fire Department units responded. The fire was extinguished and the vehicle towed to Elyria.

Nov. 6, 6:10 p.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in Langston Hall. The alarm was caused by steam from the men's shower.

Nov. 7, 1:57 a.m. An officer responded to report from a student of a subject making rude comments to him while he was walking to Langston. The non-college subject was located in Langston Hall and escorted from the building.

Nov. 7, 2:37 a.m. An officer responded to report from a resident of Langston Hall of two students involved in a disagreement in the lounge area. The students were separated and Residential life and Services was notified.

Nov. 7, 4:05 p.m. An officer transported an ill student to Urgent Care from Wilder Hall. The student complained of being dizzy and nauseous.

Nov. 7, 10:03 p.m. An officer responded to report from a student of receiving a note from an anonymous sender on his room door. He said he just transferred to Oberlin and believes the note was just a prank, but wanted the incident documented.

Nov. 8, 2:14 a.m. An officer received request from staff member for medical transport of a student. The transport was completed.

Nov. 8, 4:50 p.m. An officer responded to report of an injured student who fell from the porch at Tank Hall. The student was transported to Allen Memorial Hospital for treatment of an injured ankle.

Nov. 8, 1:02 p.m. An officer responded to report from student of the theft of three lemons from his backpack in Mudd. The bookbag was left on unattended on a table for about 10 minutes.

Nov. 9, 6:45 p.m. An officer responded to report from student of her father taking her vehicle and laving her personal possessions at Philips Gym. Oberlin Police Department was notified.

Nov. 9, 8:24 p.m. An officer received report from a hospital visitor of a hit skip accident in Hales Gym parking lot. Safety and Security and Oberlin Police Department responded.

Nov. 9, 2:45 p.m. An officer responded to report from a student of a suspicious male who pushed his way into her off campus apartment at approximately 6:15 p.m., the evening before. The subject was described as a black male, medium height and wearing a gray sweatshirt. The subject was asked to leave and complied. Oberlin Police Department was notified.

Nov. 9, 11:15 p.m. An officer received request from student for transport to Allen Memorial Hospital. The student was struck in the head during a Tae Kwon Do free-sparring class.

Nov. 9, 11:20 p.m. An officer responded to report from a resident of Noah of the theft of his bicycle from the north side of Wilder. The bike is a black Diamondback Outlook, with a gray pouch attached to the handlebars and valued at $50 to $100. The bike was not locked and is not registered.

Nov. 9, 11:26 p.m. An officer responded to report from a student resident of Burton who reported she lost her room key. The route the student took was retraced with negative results. An emergency work order was place to re-key the room.

Nov. 10, 12:44 p.m. An officer responded to report from student of a suspicious male in Baldwin. The subject, a white male, 6'0 to 6'4, dark brown hair, wearing red, white and blue clothing, was observed walking down from the second floor talking on a cellular phone. The subject exited the building with his hat obscuring his face. A search of the area was made, but the subject was not located.
