You Can Say that Again

"We didn't give up. We just took it play-by-play, down-by-down, series-by-series."

On the Crimson Thunder's mindset while playing national power Ohio Wesleyan University

The first-year wide receiver had six catches for 57 yards and continued to be one of the few brights spots in this long and weary seson fo the Crimson Thunder.

IN THE LOCKERROOM WITH...Brian Hodgkin

Picture of Brian Hodgkin

He may look friendly, but under the smiling demeanor of this mailroom worker lurks an excellent sports photographer, as well as the mayor of a small town (we kid you not-he ran unopposed in Rochester, OH this November). This man of many hats was gracious enough to give us a few minutes out of his busy schedule.

When did your interest in photography start?
I started in high school. I played football and soccer for Oberlin Senior High during the fall, but I wasn't involved in any winter sports so to get closer to the action I asked for a camera for Christmas during my sophomore year. I spent the next year and a half sporadically taking pictures for the yearbook. I didn't have the right mindset to be a successful photographer and eventually sold the camera to buy a set of golf clubs. About two and a half months ago-almost 10 years after my stint with the yearbook-I saw a close-up black and white portrait photographed by Marco Glavino. I was captivated by the expression and intensity of the photo and I knew at that moment that I wanted to be involved with photography again.

Is sports photography your main focus (pardon the pun)?
I haven't had much of a chance to branch out into other areas such as fashion, portrait or macro work. Over the next few months I'm hoping to enlist photogenic students here at the college to help with the development of my creative style so if anyone reading this can sit still and look vacant for short periods of time, please contact me.

Which OC sport is your favorite to cover?
Football is probably my favorite because of the number of opportunities I have to get a great shot. Women's Rugby and Ultimate Frisbee are not far behind though.

Sports and the mailroom: any mix?
A little bit. I have double prints made at DrugMart or Super-K. This leaves me with an extra set of prints which I pass on to the students I'm photographing. Working in the mailroom makes it convenient for me to give the photos to the students, but that's about it.

What are your feelings on club sports getting access to the athletic trainers?
I recently overhead several conversations at North Fields regarding that same subject. I'd think that if the College offered the use of their property for these athletic events to take place, if at all possible they would make an effort to have these services available for club sports. Trainers are usually in short supply though, so it might be nice if a few of the athletes participating in the club sports made an effort to find out if there was any way for them to receive athletic training themselves.

Do you follow any pro sports?
Born and raised in this area I'm of course a fan of any Cleveland team, but I don't really follow any specific one in detail. The only pro sport I pay particular attention to is motorcycle roadracing.

Our staff and readers love your work. Ever considered doing photography professionally?
I believe that photography has provided me with something that I've been missing and that my approach to it, being more philosophical, intellectual and artistic in nature, will allow me to eventually become independent of having a typical day-job.

To step off topic ever so slightly: give us your opinion on the federal budget surplus.
As far as the nation is concerned I take more of a proactive stance on how the money should be spent with education taking first priority. The U.S. has had a bad habit of consistently showing the rest of the world how ignorant we really are. Can you find Canada on an unmarked map of North America?

And our movie question: We can't think of any movies with sports photographers in prominent roles, so tell us why Hollywood should turn its lenses toward your lenses.
Knowing about the morals and values that "Hollywood" traditionally holds, I wouldn't want to be associated with it, because regardless of the input by professional photographers, to sell more tickets they would most certainly bastardize it.

What are they talking about?

This week...

'Triple-double'

Sport: Basketball

What it means: There are five main statistical categories in basketball: points, rebounds (catching a missed shot off of the rim or backboard), assists (passing the ball to a teammate immediately setting them up for a score), steals (successfully getting the ball away from an opponent who has control without making contact with the opponent) and blocked shots. When a player has double-digit statistics in any three of these categories in a single game, they are said to have scored a triple-double.
