You Can Say that Again

IN THE LOCKERROOM WITH...The Sports editors

This week we go behind the scenes with the people who go behind the scenes: Sports editor types junior Eben Askins and sophomore Aaron Mucciolo.

So what makes you two worthy of an In the Lockerroom interview?
EA: Well, I don't need to explain my worthiness, however I must place the blame on my co-editor who so ineptly forgot to do an In the Lockeroom this week.

AM: It was more a terrible boggling of phone calls and e-mails on my part. That and Eben doesn't consider Dungeons and Dragons to be a 'sport'.

Do either of you play sports?
EA: I am a member of the small, but proud baseball team. Please come out and watch us in the spring. We stand around and sweat a lot.

AM: Theoretically I run track, and rumors of my existence as a Horsecow last year are abound.

Have you found that your experiences in the athletic program have made your jobs as Sports editors any easier?
EA: Yes; now bothering athletes with late-night phone calls does not seem as regretful as it could have been.

AM: I have more contacts on teams and a better understanding of the team dynamics at Oberlin. Being a Sports editor has certainly made my athletics department experience better. The chicks dig me now more than ever.

How did you spend your Thanksgiving vacations?
EA: I managed to keep my sanity here at the friendly confines of Oberlin. I got to avoid Dascomb Turkey, so that was good.

AM: Sleeping. A lot. Plus an international student friend of mine invited me along on their Thanksgiving meal. You haven't done turkey day until you've done it with curried goat.

Did you watch any Thanksgiving Day football?
EA: Yes, I saw a boring Lions game, and I watched the beginning of the Miami-Dallas game before Marino began to show off his geriatric arm.

AM: Nope. I feel so ashamed.

Do you enjoy professional sports?
EA: Yes, my favorite teams in respective order are the New York Mets, Knicks, Giants and Rangers. I also enjoy St. Johns College basketball.

AM: I'm a die-hard Mets fan, and watch Sportscenter at least once daily. But I also love amateur level sports like Cape Cod league baseball. Even watching my HS teams play when I'm back on break can be very nice.

Do you think the Mets have a chance against the Braves next season?
EA: Yes, but only if the most embarrassing manager in professional sports, Bobby Valentine, is sent to the electric chair.

AM: I thought we had lethal injection in NY... anyway, they totally have a shot since Atlanta's pitching keeps getting older and the Mets have the best infield in baseball.

How do you feel about the Pokemon craze that is currently sweeping the nation?
EA: All I know is that Raichu evolves into Pikachu. Beyond that, it's just pre-teen madness.

AM: I'm for it. Anything that encourages reading skills among our nation's youth, even if the words aren't English, is fine by me.

If you were stuck on a desert island, which would rather have as your house band: the Backstreet Boys or the Dixie Chicks?
EA: That's a tough call. I need the, uh, female companionship. But then again I've always wanted to commit mass homicide on any one of those "male" groups. I'd have to go with the chicks.

AM: What? No John Tesh?

Name the best film you've seen in the past year and explain why you liked it so much.
EA: The best film I've seen in the last year was The Starmaker. It's by the same director who did Cinemo Paradiso. I can't really explain why I liked it, other than it was very sad.

AM: I finally caught The Usual Suspects and seriously found the ensemble acting and the simplicity of the concept mixed with the delicate intricacies of both script and direction to be absolutely enthralling.

What are they talking about?

This week...

'2-3 zone defense'

Sport: basketball

What it means: When a team is on defense, they choose to play either 'man-to-man'- each defender stays with an assigned offensive player- or a zone defense - each defender guards an area of the floor and is responsible for any players that come into that area. 2-3 zone defense is the most popular zone defense. In it, the defensive players spread out on their half of the court roughly in this way:

In this way, the defense covers both the inside and outside of their half of the court, and gives efficient coverage to all areas at once. The downside to this defense is that it does not easily allow a team to double-team (put two defenders on one offensive player) without sacrificing a large area of the court.
