Field Hockey Takes it to the Wire

The Yeowomen Lose in Another Close Battle

by Brook Whittmore

A composed and powerful Oberlin field hockey team took the field last Saturday, coming off only three days rest since taking down a powerful Kenyon squad. The team seemed more than ready to beat Denison, but were unable to make the win materialize, taking a 1-2 loss. This loss drops their conference record to 3-4-0 and their overall record to 3-5-0.

During the first half of the game Oberlin dominated the playing field, supplemented in part by the NCAC Player of the Week, junior Emily Johnson, who went on a solo mission early in the half and ripped a screaming shot into Denison's net.

Denison, however, managed to sneak a goal in for themselves, bringing the score to a 1-1 tie. Oberlin's excellent defense and passing precision prevented a second Denison score in the first half of play. The game hit halftime with the score holding at 1-1.

The second half showcased Oberlin again playing great defense and moving the ball to the offense, but lack of execution prevented a second Oberlin score. Denison hit a second shot, giving them a lead they never relinquished.

"We broke down Denison's style of play, and made them play our game," junior Jessica Raynor said. Unfortunately that was not enough, as Denison was able to hold off any further attacks by the Yeowomen for the win.

Despite the slim loss, Oberlin still played a very complete game. Oberlin junior goalkeeper Pamela Walker shut down nine of eleven shots from Denison's offense.

Denison is no stranger to tight matches with Oberlin. Last year Oberlin took Denison into overtime almost obliterating Denison's long winning streak.

An obvious competitive flame burns inside the hearts of the Oberlin team.

"We're psyched to put them [Denison] in their place when we play them on our field this season," Raynor said. "We're not letting any team walk off the field without giving them a tough fight."

"Although our record doesn't accurately demonstrate our playing style, our victory over Kenyon demonstrates exactly what we can do," first-year Ilana Turoff said.

Turoff added, "I think the team is one of the best I have played on, and I think that the competition should watch out."

The next two games are home for Oberlin, and they have the ability to win both, playing Hood College on Sunday, Oct. 1, then Denison the following Wednesday, Oct. 4.
