Athlete Of the Week

Becky Kanuch, a senior from Oberlin, Ohio, has been a large part of Oberlin’s women’s soccer team this season.
While being one of the leading goal scorers on the team, her leadership and experience on the field guarantee that the Yeowomen will be contenders in the North Coast Athletic Conference this season.

Against Bluffton on Sept. 8, Kanuch scored twice and added an assist in the 7-0 home win. Her two goals tied her with teammate, junior Courtney Stackhouse for the team lead with six goals on the season. She also leads the team in points scored with 16.
This past Tuesday, Kanuch again flashed her magic, scoring with a mere 33 seconds left in the game to send it into overtime. The goal now makes her the team leader in goals and points scored.
Her seven goals and 18 points scored in five games this season put her ahead of all scorers in the NCAC. She is scoring at a remarkable 4.5ppg clip to begin the season.
Kanuch will attempt to keep the ball rolling this weekend when the Yeowomen take on NCAC opponent Kenyon at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. and visiting La Roche on Sunday at 1 p.m. at North Fields.

Kanuch is also a standout shortstop for the Oberlin College softball team and is also a guard on the basketball team. In her first year with the softball squad, Kanuch led the team in virtually every offensive category, including batting average and doubles.

In the Locker Room with. . .

Junior soccer studs Rich Braithwaite, Will Singer and Simon Spaid are interesting characters to say the least. When these three get together...well just wait and see.

After about 15 minutes of preparation for their interview, the three threw their hands in the middle and yelled “team” on three, well at least Simon did.

So what are each of you majoring in?

WS: I don’t remember, I think I was drunk.
RB: I am in contact improv. Uhh...girls.
SS: Politics and Law & Society.

Ok...So Rich and Will, I overheard someone calling you two the “Kings of Naked Soccer.” Is this true?

WS: I don’t remember, I think I was drunk.
RB: Uhh...naked girls.
SS: Oh yeah, these two are the “Kings of Naked Soccer.”
RB: Uhh...field hockey.
RB: Uhh...naked fun.

Seems to me like Rich talks a lot.

WS: No, he just grins a lot of the time.

Right. So moving on... Rich, what would you do, or should I say what have you done for $25?

RB: While at Stevenson I soaked my family jewels in A1 Sauce then licked the bowl clean...
WS: Pubes and all.
WS: Believe me, he did it, it was my money. Oh yeah, I still owe you six bucks.
SS: But he would have done it for $15.

Sarah Kipp, an unfortunate spectator to the event, had two words to describe it...“Hot Nuts.”

So do any of you guys have nicknames?

RB: Will was “Diesel.”
WS: But for some reason that didn’t stick.
SS: Rich is “Meathead”
WS: Also “Meatdick”
SS: Also “Meat”
WS: Then there was the day that I was the “Fruit-Eating Diesel Machine.”
SS: You were never the “Fruit-Eating Diesel Machine.”

What about Simon. Any nicknames?

RB: Simon is “The Gentlemen’s Spy.”

Simon, what was it like growing up with (teammate) Jesse Kipp?

SS: He was pretty much the way he is now. He had long hair and everyone thought he was a girl. But Sarah was cool.

So the “Love Hole” fell out of soccer hands this year. Whats up with that?

WS: The “Love Hole” moves in cycles.
RB: It was given a lot of love last year.
WS: It needed a break, I mean when it gives love to like 26 people at one time...

The philosophical side of Simon starts to show.

SS: Sometimes the only way to show true love is to let it go...but you know there is actually a party there Friday night... Noah 405.

So Simon you are in goal this year. What’s that like?

SS: Yeah, I am good with my hands and horizontal movement.
RB: Yeah, he’s pretty good up and down, in and out.
WS: Yeah, he can get up quick.
RB: He’s good in the box.

Are there any cool first-years this season?

SS&WS: NO! (Will then adds...“I don’t know, I think I was drunk.)
RB: Uhh...Girls.

You have just received a glimpse of the enigmas that are Rich, Will and Simon. My final word: Will, yeah that was $25 well spent my friend, but do you really remember, or were you drunk?
