Anonymous anti-Zionism unwelcome
To the Editors:
Since the beginning of this semester, the words zionism = racism
have been repeatedly written in marker, or affixed with stickers, in various locations around campus,
including by the door of the Hillel office in Wilder Hall. We (and others) have heard from a number
of students who have found these words hurtful.
As a Student Life administration, we are troubled by the way in which this message has been delivered
in that it permits no debate and no reply to those responsible for it. As Oberlins Student
Bill of Rights articulates, members of the College are expected to take responsibility for
their expressions; anonymous expressions are inimical to the free and open exchange of ideas.
Students and other members of our community must have the courage to take responsibility for their
words, and to be prepared to defend them. Liberal education requires nothing less. The postering
policy newly proposed by Student Life requires that all flyers and posters include the name of
a college office, organization, or of an individual member of the college community. It is our
belief that this encourages the very best kind of free speech in our community.
We would be pleased to hear from individuals with views on this matter.
