Lady Yeorunners finish fifth

At the top of her class: Senior NCAC triple-jump champion Shannon Houlihan practices the hurdles.

The Track and Field NCAC Conference Championships last Friday were held at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. The women of Oberlin pulled out a very strong showing, grabbing fifth place overall. Denison University took home first-place honors.

Oberlin was led by senior Shannon Houlihan and junior Teresa Collins. For each of the last three seasons Houlihan has placed second in the triple jump at the NCAC Championships. This year Houlihan was hungrier than ever and her hard work paid off as she won first-place in the triple jump with a leap of 35’04’’.

Houlihan didn’t stop there, though, finishing third in the heptathlon (3,791 points) and the 100m hurdles (15.70). She also finished a strong fourth in the long jump (16’06”).

Adding points to Oberlin’s cause, Collins produced some of the best performances of her career. Collins finished second to Houlihan in the triple jump (33’07”), then upped the ante and stole second place in the 400m dash with a blazing time of 57.94. Collins also took fourth place in the 200m dash, running a 26.16.

The women’s 4x100m relay finished in second place with a time of 49.83, then turned around and snagged fourth place in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:14.60.

Junior Leslie Bosworth finished second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:05.35 and fifth in the 100m hurdles at 16.15. She was also a part of the second-place 4x100m and fourth-place 4x400m relay teams for the Yeowomen.

Senior Faye Doherty finished fourth in the triple jump (33’03”) and seventh in the heptathlon with 2,791 points.

First-year Danielle Brooks finished fifth in the 200m dash with a time of 27.40, seventh in the 100m dash at 13.32 and second with the 4x100m relay team.

Senior Amber Coleman finished fifth in the 100m dash (13.03) and was part of both the second-place 4x100 and fourth place 4x400 relay teams.

Overall it was a very successful weekend for the Yeorunners. Finishing fifth out of a field of 10 is no small accomplishment, especially in the uber-competitive North Coast Athletic Conference.

“The weekend went really well, we were able to run as a team and pass the baton well in the relays and a lot of our individual runners and jumpers represented, too,” Bosworth said.
