Students need a vote in search for new Dean

To the Editor:
The Student Senate resolves that the position of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Oberlin College should be filled with direct input from students. The Senate believes a search committee which includes students will be a more balanced, more thoughtful committee better capable of finding the most qualified candidate.

The students particpating in the search should have voice and vote at all official meetings of the search committee and access to all search materials.

Additionally, the Senate sees a national search for a Dean as preferable to an internal search, believing that a larger search pool can only benefit the College. The Dean must be able to handle diverse disciplines and interests with impartiality and handle a modern, expanding curriculum in a time of budget cuts. His or her selection is a critical process which must reflect the needs of faculty, staff and students.
