To defame, disrespect anyone is to do so to all

[Note: The following is an open letter to the Oberlin Community.]

To the Editor:

On Sunday, April 21, Kaukab Siddique gave a talk entitled "Zionism and the current `Peace Process,'" sponsored by Students for a Free Palestine. Siddique denied the occurrence of the Holocaust, passed out hate-filled literature including the age-old claim that the Jews killed Jesus and called for a boycott of all Jewish-owned businesses. This talk wasn't a forum for intellectual discussion. Instead, it was classical anti-Semitism. Hateful speech prevents open communication and trust.

As concerned members of the Oberlin community, we deplore this type of hate speech. We believe that to defame and disrespect anyone is to do so to all of us. We stand together to say that hate speech is completely unacceptable.
