Women's Basketball

This was a disappointing year for Head Coach Ann Gilbert as her women's basketball team went 2-22, and secured themselves a position at last place in the NCAC with a 0-16 conference record. The team finished the season with four first-years who will likely help improve the team over the next few seasons.
Sophomore Carrie Losneck led the team with 12.1 points a game She was also third in the NCAC in rebounds, averaging 9.9 a game. She had 20 of them against Catholic University of America on Nov. 19 to go with her 21 points. Losneck was also fifth in the NCAC for blocks, averaging 0.9 a game, 12th in scoring and fourth in steals.

Men's Basketball

Despite a record of 2-22, 0-16 in the NCAC, the men's basketball team could have had a record of 10-14 as a third of their games were lost by fewer than ten points. The team had strong contributions from first-years John Norris and Richard Santiago. Norris averaged 12.5 points a game, 5.3 rebounds and 23 blocks. Junior Anthony Calloway led all scorers averaging 14.5 a game including a season-high 29 points against Denison University on Jan. 24. He also averaged 5 rebounds a game. Sophomore Frank Boley had 50 steals and 43 assists this year. He also hit six 3-point baskets in a game against Case Western Reserve University on Feb. 14.

Men and Women's Indoor Track

Lack of team depth sunk most of the indoor track team's hopes for top place wins at meets this year. Without enough people to place in every event and score points, the best work the Yeomen and Yeowomen runners could do in the conference was finish sixth and eighth out of nine teams, as they did at the championship meet at Denison University on Mar. 2 and 3.
At this meet Senior Ted Lytle, who ran a leg of the 4 x 200-meter, was able to earn both a school record as well as a field house record in the 400-meter event. His time of 50.10 seconds was two tenths off of the qualifying time for Nationals. He also broke Oberlin's record time for the 500-meter by two seconds at the Greater Cleveland College meet on Feb. 16.
For the women, sprinter sophomore Carissa Bennett earned all-Conference ranking twice with her second-place finish in the 55-meter dash and third-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles.

Women's Swimming

Every year Oberlin hosts the NCAC Conference Swimming Championships and every year the Yeowomen attempt to avoid last place, always without success. This year was no different as, after three hectic days of swimming, the Yeowomen wound up a mere 20 points away from their goal. Oberlin finished with 189 points, 33 more points than last year and tied with Ohio Wesleyan University for last place.
The season was plagued with illnesses for the Yeowomen, though this did little to deter many of the swimmers from setting records, both personal and official.
Co-captain senior Jenny Kusner broke her own team record in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:13.91 to place fifth at the Championship meet. The next day, she broke another team record in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:46.91. She finished ahead of the NCAA B-cut in the 200-IM, securing a berth at Nationals.
First-year Clara Stemwedel was another record breaker, setting the team record in the 1000-yard freestyle with an 11:11.47 split in the mile.

Men's Swimming

Slim, trim and hairless, the men's swimming team took fourth place at the NCAC Championships this year.
Senior Dan Rogers swam the 50-yard freestyle in just 21.11, only two seconds behind his own Oberlin record, comfortably making a NCAA B-cut, allowing him to compete at Nationals.
First-year Matt Soellner swam a lifetime best in the 200-yard butterfly, touching the wall in just 1:57.99 in the preliminary round. He quickly bettered his best, timing in at 1:57.13 in the finals.
Soellner completed the 500-yard free in 4:43.56.
