New group for students in process of recovering from eating disorders

To the Editor:
The beginning of an academic year can be a frustrating switch in lifestyle - both for returning students, who find themselves back in the college rat-race, and for new students who must grapple with, among other things, the prospects of new roommates, independence, leaving home and fear of the "freshman fifteen." This last concept can be a paralyzing one, particularly for students who have struggled with eating disorders.

We are writing to spread the word about a support group for students who are in the process of recovering from eating disorders. This student-run group began meeting last semester under the "umbrella" of Oberlin's Feminist Majority, and proved to be an extremely positive experience for those involved. Its purpose is not to provide group therapy, but a private space in which individuals can gain support in the recovery process, by seeking and sharing input on the day-to-day hurdles, as well as the "big picture." Our goal is that members will feel more powerful in using feminist convictions to tackle these issues in their own lives. What has made the group remarkable is not so much the fact that all of its members have had eating disorders, but that all have made the decision to recover.

We encourage you to get in touch with the Feminist Majority if you are interested.
