Fencing overlooked

To the Editor:

In what was, I'm sure, a simple oversight, the Review  neglected to publish the results of a United States Fencing Association tournament held at Oberlin on February 9. Nor was the tournament listed under sporting events for that week in the paper published on Friday the 7th. Since a similar tournament - also held at Oberlin and won by an Oberlin fencer - was well publicized last semester, I'm quite confident that the oversight was a one time occurrence.

As de facto coach of the Oberlin Fencing Team, I would like to heartily congratulate sophomore Matt Strine on his fourth place finish in the epee tournament. To be included in the final round of competition, Mr. Strine had to defeat fencers from Kent State, Cleveland area clubs, and others from as far away as Columbus.

Also of note was junior Jay Gates' semi-final showing in the same event. Gentlemen, your hard work has paid off; you defended the home turf well. Finally, I'd like to welcome Damien, Sarah, Dolsy, and Andy to the world of competition fencing. Congratulations to them and the rest of the squad for a great competitive effort!
