Secretary of Treasury Lawrence Summers to Speak Monday

U.S. Secretary of Treasury Lawrence Summers will speak next Monday at noon in Finney Chapel. Summers will discuss "Economic Challenges and Priorities in the New Economy." Summers, who became the Secretary of the Treasury in July 1999, will discuss such questions as, "What is the New Economy?", "How did we get here?", "What are the greatest obstacles and challenges?" and "How can we best keep the prosperity of the New Economy going?"

Though the College maintains that Summers' visit speaks highly of the College in general, there has been some talk of protest. The last time Summers was scheduled to speak at Oberlin, in mid-November, socialist groups responded in force to protest him.

Summers has written extensively on economic analysis and policy and is the author of Understanding Unemployment and the co-author of Reform in Eastern Europe.

Prior to joining the present administration, Summers served as vice president of development economics and chief economist of the World Bank from 1991 to 1993.

Environmental Design Group To Meet Saturday at Public Library

This Saturday, December 2, at 1:30 P.M., at the Oberlin Public Library on Main Street, members of the community and college will meet with representatives of Environmental Design Innovation Center and the Oberlin Sustainable Agriculture Project to discuss future plans for the Clark Farm property.

The 70-acre property intends both to provide sustainable agricultural solutions to regional problems and to establish an educational and community-based center.

This Saturday is an opportunity for students and residents to learn more about the project and share ideas and concerns.
