Volleyball Finishes Seventh
by Dave Cammarata

With a seventh place finish in the Capital University Classic, Oberlin’s women’s volleyball season began. As the season evolves so will the hopes and dreams of many of the players.

Said assistant coach Sara Breon, “Volleyball is a very good sport. The girls on this year’s team continually try to improve and become better.”

While the season is a long way from complete, the obstacles that this team has been presented with have already made them stumble, slip and fall and now they are picking themselves up, dusting themselves off and trying harder than ever.

At the Capital University Classic, Oberlin began their matches with a difficult opponent who went on to win the tournament. The Yeowomen pushed the match to a difficult fifth set and only lost by five points. The rest of the scoring went 30-15, 28-30, 30-25, and 30-25.

After this difficult defeat the Yeowomen went on to play Heidelberg and even though they were turned away in three matches the competition was fierce. They fell 30-24, 30-22, and 30-19. Every point was scratched for but the Yeowomen were just outmatched by the bigger Heidelberg.
As the Yeowomen strode to compete with Capital it became evident that this tournament would just not be the one to provide a much needed confidence boost. The solid Capital team dispatched Oberlin in three hard fought but quick matches, 30-13, 30-20 and 30-24.

“Wilmington was a team that lulled us to sleep” sophomore Amber Coleman said.
It was a match to be won. It was a match that could have fallen for Oberlin but instead went down in the books for Wilmington. In five sets, Wilmington beat Oberlin 30-27, 30-21, 13-30 and 30-18. After two early sets, Oberlin was able to even things up but were repelled in their surge towards victory in the last set.
In a season that is not even a third done the Oberlin Yeowomen have come together as a team and are prepared for the rest of the season. As a whole the amount of errors per person throughout the team has dropped. With sophomore Eden Trenor riding a zero average and sophomore Darci Leonhart playing with a 0.05 average this team is just a few more tries away from jelling
.
“I think that if we keep working together, we’ll become the strong team I know we are. We have a lot of talent and people have taken great steps toward improvement,” Coleman said. In all likelihood, the defeats that are being encountered today will help to make this team come together tomorrow.
