Towey Wins Two Gold Medals
by Tom Mulligan

Mary Margaret Towey, a senior member of the indoor and outdoor track and field teams, won two gold medals and a silver medal at the United States Track and Field National Masters Championships at Louisiana State University in late July.
Competing in the women’s 50-54 age bracket, Towey went head-to-head with many top athletes just returned from the World Masters Championships in Brisbane, Australia.
Throwing in the intense heat and humidity of the Baton Rouge summer, she overcame the elements to win gold in the shot and hammer, silver in the discus, and fourth place in the javelin. Her winning throws in both the shot and hammer ranked her at number five in the world in her age group in both events; her discus result was ranked eleventh in the world so far this year.
Towey came into her first Masters competition not sure what to expect. “I was pretty much just hoping to establish the idea that I belonged at that level, competing against the best throwers my age in the nation,’” Towey said.
“There were lots of top coaches there, both as competitors and as officials, and everyone was always willing to give tips if they saw something wrong. There was never an ego problem — everyone just wanted everyone else to get better. The camaraderie was just incredible!”
