Last weekend, on Nov. 3-4, the Oberlin men’s and women’s intercollegiate bowling teams competed in their first match of the year at Kent State’s Colonial Village Lanes in Akron, Ohio. The tournament’s grueling format consisted of six games on Saturday and three on Sunday followed by six Baker-style games, in which each of five team members rolls two frames of a single game score.
Senior Dan Blackburn’s 212 was the highest game rolled for Oberlin on Saturday. Blackburn was also tops among Oberlin bowlers with a 170 average for the tournament. First-years Sam Hoffman (157) and Andy Seidel (156) also averaged above 150 for the men’s squad.
On Sunday, first-year Elaine Hill shot a 219, Oberlin’s highest game of the weekend. Hill’s 156 average was best among Oberlin women, followed by senior Kia Treier’s 141 standard. Sophomore Adam Carlson (211), junior Jacob Adams (201) and Hoffman (200) also turned in high games for Oberlin on Sunday.
Oberlin finished last among the 22 men’s and five women’s teams from schools as far away as North Carolina State. The men’s division was won by Saginaw Valley (Mich.) State College. Saginaw’s Bill O’Neill, the 2000-01 national collegiate Bowler of the Year, paced the men’s scoring with a 254 average, including consecutive perfect 300 games on Sunday morning. O’Neill’s second 300 game was bowled against Oberlin’s men’s team.
Morehead (Ky.) State won the women’s division, while Jes Lesagonicz of Shippensburg (Pa.) University topped all women with a 214 average.
Oberlin’s next intercollegiate event will be the ACU-I Regional tournament on Feb. 15-17 at a campus yet to be determined. The team, which participates in three tournaments per year, will also host the Oberlin College Unconventional on a Saturday in April to be determined.
Tom Reid, Oberlin’s bowling guru, not only is the coach and leader of the club team, but also teaches bowling classes at the College Lanes every semester.
