Women’s Tennis Wins Again, Men Lose Close One
by Brian Roche

Last Saturday, the Oberlin men’s and women’s tennis teams played host to Malone College from Canton, Ohio. The women secured another convincing win on the heels of last week’s 8-1 victory, defeating Malone with a score of 7-2, while the men’s team lost in a close 4-3 match.
The men’s season record fell to 0-3 as Malone slipped ahead. Sophomores Jamie Frankel and Marian Bocek led the team, getting out to an early 5-2 lead in the number one doubles match, but eventually losing 9-7. First-year Nick Ogren also put in a strong performance as he defeated Malone’s Derek Schildt in the number four singles match with a score of 6-3 and 6-2.
Bocek, who also won his number two singles match 6-2, 6-1, said of the day’s effort, “I thought it was a pretty good game. We played really well. Too bad we lost. Me and Jamie Frankel did pretty well, and on our part it was a pretty good performance. And the whole team played well. Too bad we just didn’t win.”
Coach Don Hunsinger praised the team’s effort and emphasized the closeness of the match, saying, “The men really improved greatly, and it was a tremendous match. Their effort was much improved over the week’s work, and there were just a couple of points that kept us from winning the match 4-3. And you like matches like that where it’s really a competitive situation. And the team that makes the fewest mistakes wins.”
The women’s team fared better, defeating Malone with apparent ease. Standouts of the match were first-year Ary Amerikaner, who won in the number two singles spot with a score of 6-0, 6-1, sophomore Laura Koehn, who took the number three match 6-1, 6-0, and first-year Jessica Hauser, who won number four 6-0, 6-1. In spite of the impressive scores, the team still thinks that they could have done better.

Coach Hunsinger said of the match, “[The women’s team] didn’t play as well as they did in the first match. They had a little let down in doubles, but in singles, pretty good performance. Everybody played really well. We were missing one of our top six [sophomore Whitney Reichheld] that day, but all in all it wasn’t the improvement that as a coach you would like to see from the first match to the second match. But as a coach, also it gives you room to work on things, because when mistakes are made, you can change those mistakes. So we have plenty of things to work on now.”
He also commented on the possible effect of the team’s walk over Albion College on Feb. 17, saying, “I think that part of the problem that happened to the women last week was they saw the results [of the last match], and psychologically they were not as prepared as they should have been, and that’s hard to overcome.”

Both teams will face Otterbein College on Saturday. Coach Hunsinger commented on the upcoming match: "We’re not sure yet what Otterbein has this year. Last year we did beat them and they’ve probably improved, and it really should be a good match with the women. With the men we hear they have a division one transfer, so they could be very good. We don’t know. But our men really made some good progress last week.”
The matches will take place at home in the John Heisman Club Fieldhouse.
