Softball Swept in Doubleheader Versus Kenyon
by Jesse Aron

Mary Culhane Field couldn’t recover from the snow that fell last Friday night, and the Yeowomen couldn’t recover from Kenyon, who came to play on Sunday afternoon. The doubleheader scheduled for Saturday was postponed due to the overnight snow, but the delay didn’t help Oberlin as they lost big to the women of Kenyon College.
The team lost by scores of 13-0, and 10-1, their record dropping to 0-4 in the North Coast Atlantic Conference, and 1-10 overall.

“We started off sluggish in the first two innings of the first game, and that makes it extremely difficult to come back,” Head Coach Jane Wildman said. The Yeowomen were indeed sluggish, giving up four runs in each of the first two innings. They also committed two errors in that time, and five overall in the first game.
Senior Becky Kanuch noted that the team just had a lot of small errors “that kept building up.”
“We were not aggressive enough at the plate,” Coach Wildman said, stating another problem the team had. “We were tentative and hesitant.” Most of the players agreed that weak hitting, coupled with the failure to make solid defensive plays led to the team’s downfall in the doubleheader.
The second game was only a little better for the Yeowomen. They did manage to put a run on the board, as senior Dawn Sweeny singled in Kanuch in the fourth inning. This proved to be Oberlin’s only run of the afternoon. Sweeny finished the second game two for two at the plate, after already starting on the mound in both games. She pitched a total of nine innings on Sunday, striking out five over the course of the two games.
Kenyon out-hit the Yeowomen 27-7, led by their third basemen Husteck, who had three RBI in the first game and five in the second.
Towards the end of the first game the Yeowomen started to make the routine plays, first-year Megan Beach said, and in the second game, they had only one error. Beach had one of the Yeowomen’s three hits in the first game.
“We basically just weren’t mentally prepared for it,” Beach said. “It’s like we had never played together before. It was our attitude; if we fix that, we’ll play better softball.”
Wildman also cited this lack of focus, but said she thinks it won’t be a problem in the future. “They know we can play well and win…they just need to keep working hard in practice, and we will see more success,” she said.
The team got its first win over spring break against Oswego State, a very solid team, according to Coach Wildman. She stated this as a reason she thinks this team will play better.
The Oberlin women have now lost their first four conference games after dropping a doubleheader to Hiram College the week before. The team looks to regain its focus this weekend as they play host to Wittenberg University on Saturday. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
While Wildman said that the team’s morale might be down a bit after the four straight conference loses, she insisted that there will be a change for the better. “This team bounces back well.”
