Golf
Team in Full Swing at Kenyon
by Channing Joseph
The
Oberlin mens golf team ended with a 15th place finish last
Saturday, April 6, at the Kenyon Cup Invitational in Gambier, Ohio.
The showing was the first time that a team from Oberlin had participated
in a varsity golf competition in nearly three decades. Yet despite
the somewhat disappointing placing and some understandable complaints
about the weather, there seems to remain a well of optimism for
the teams future progress.
First-year
player Tom King said, The first day the weather was not exactly
ideal. It actually snowed. I could have played better, but there
were things in my swing that I liked, so hopefully I will be able
to do better. As a whole team, we kind of struggled. We only had
one decent round out of all of us, but again, given the conditions,
it could have been worse. With the team we have, we will be able
to recover.
Sophomore Ed Geschke, of Victoria, Australia, led the way with a
score of 87 in the first round, 77 in the second, and a total of
164, finishing the competition in 43rd place. Behind him, the second
best players during the invitational were teammates King and senior
Aditya Malkani, who tallied 90 and 87 in the first round, with 85
and 88 in the second, respectively totaling 175 each.
Rounding out the team roster were first-year Prithvi Reddy and senior
Osman Rana, who racked up totals of 203 and 204, respectively.
Next up for the mens golf team is the Wooster Invitational,
to be held in Wooster, Ohio, on Friday, April 19.
