Athlete Of the Week

Junior Emily Enderle is a track star from Covington, Ohio, who transferred to Oberlin this year from Wittenberg University, where she was NCAC Field Athlete of the Year in 2000.
Enderle hit for the cycle at last Saturday’s Case Western Reserve University Invitational, participating in a throwing event, a running event, a jumping event, and a hurdle event.
She made two top ten finishes with third in the javelin and eight in the long jump. She also finished 14th in the 100m hurdles and 16th in the 800m run.
The women’s track team placed first at the meet, gathering 120 points and beating out the nearest competitor by 23.
Both the men’s and the women’s track teams will continue the outdoor season at the Oberlin Invitational today.

In the Locker Room with. . .

In the dimly-lit, dark and dreary Dascomb dining hall, junior softball player Anna Roseberry discusses just a few of the complications involved in dressing in drag, while professing a deep love for her chosen sport and a hint of nostalgia for the small island off the coast of Washington state, which she calls home.

So, you sewed my friend’s Drag Ball outfit — How was that?

AR: It was so much fun. I love seeing and making things, especially when they look good.

Just in case you didn’t see junior Adam Tully last weekend, he was the seven-foot tall queen and runway disc jockey in a strapless frock, wearing a black and white wig reminiscent of Cruella Deville — hence his drag name, Phallacia Deville.

Did many people know it was you who made it, or did you want more recognition?

AR: I’ve gotten enough recognition from the people that are most important to me. And I’ve already gotten three more dresses lined up for next year.

What gets you up everyday?

AR: That I can go out and have fun playing softball.

Softball must be really important to you then, huh?

AR: Second only to school. I do everything that I can with the team and for the team. I enjoy being part of the team and contributing to their efforts.

What is your astrological sign?

AR: Capricorn. It’s also generally accurate for me. I’m very stubborn. I was born on Christmas.

Oh, like Adam. (Remember, junior Adam Tully is the drag queen and mutual friend whose costume she sewed for the Ball.) Did you ever have the whole issue of not getting a birthday party when you were younger?

AR: Until I was 17, I had never really had a birthday party.

So have sports held great importance for your family?

AR: Yes, especially baseball and crew. My little sister plays T-Ball. My dad’s a coach for her team and for the high school crew team back home. My dad and I play catch a lot.

Was it a big adjustment to come to Oberlin?

AR: At first. It was because Oberlin is so much bigger than my hometown. I felt like I was in a city. Things are so packed together. Back at home, there is not another house for another half mile. I grew up in the woods.

What’s your favorite thing about this place?
AR: I like the fact that it’s far from home. I like the classes that they offer. I like having huge libraries that I can hide myself in. I like the athletic program and being able to play softball, which I wouldn’t have been able to do if I had come four years ago. It’s a combination of everything a college should have.

So getting back to previous topics… Did you have a good time at Drag Ball?

AR: Yeah. I actually went in drag, so it was an experience to tape my boobs. And also to talk with my straight, guy friends who I think probably thought I was a lesbian because I had my hair slicked back too, and a mustache painted on my face. The thing is that I’m so used to having breasts that the funniest thing about the evening was when I jogged across the street to Drag Ball and nothing bounced. I kept running my hands down my chest because it was so flat, and it weirded me out.

I had a similar experience wearing rubber panties during the event. They are meant to be really tight, so once I had tucked myself between my legs, I could barely tell I had ever had a penis. Yeah, weird…Anyway, what’s your favorite “Sesame Street” character?

AR: Grover. He’s so nice and sweet and fuzzy and cozy and always wants hugs, like me.

Fair enough, Anna, and now that I think of it, you yourself seem just as wholesome as Grover does, though Grover never did have to tape his boobs.
