First-year
Sets 400m Record at Baldwin-Wallace
by Jacob Kramer-Duffield
The
Oberlin track and field teams turned into the final stretch of their
season this past weekend, with most of the team competing in a final
warm-up meet last Saturday, the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational, before
the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships. Senior Anna Ruth
and junior Emily Enderle began their NCAC Championships participation
at the College of Wooster in the Heptathlon, with Ruth placing third
and Enderle sixth, putting the team in a good position for this
weekend.
The
standout at the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational was first-year Bret
Petersen, who shattered the Oberlin College outdoor 400-meter dash
record with a time of 48.5, good for second place. The old record
of 48.7 over 440 yards was held by Holmes Brown since 1964, and
Petersen earned NCAC Runner of the Week honors for his efforts.
For the men, other standouts included the 4x100m team, which placed
fourth, first-year Ryan McGinnis 12th place finish in the
800m, and senior Frederick Jacksons 15th place finish in the
200m. Travis Oman was 20th and Mike Pennino 21st in the 400m hurdles;
sophomore Jeremy Lane was 17th in the triple jump.
The womens team, in typical fashion, brought home a number
of impressive finishes. Senior April Wynn placed third in the triple
jump, while sophomore Shannon Houlihan finished 11th and first-year
Faye Doherty notched 16th; junior Courtney Stackhouse was eighth
in the 100m; sophomore Teresa Collins was ninth in the 400m, while
junior Vicki Alla placed 22nd. Wynn also placed 11th in the 100m
hurdles, while Houlihan and Doherty finished 21st and 26th, respectively,
in the long jump; first-year Leslie Bosworth finished 13th in the
400m hurdles.
Both
teams compete in the NCAC championships at Ohio Wesleyan Universtiy
in Delaware, Ohio.
