Day X not place for Palestine

To the Editors:

At the OCAW rally this afternoon, Oberlin’s City Council Chair made a great speech and student read his inspiring poem. Then a representative from Students for a Free Palestine was called up, and it made me cringe. It is outrageous to invite the entire college and community to a rally for peace and unity, and then tack on a statement on a controversial and disconnected subject. Having SFP speak in such a way is to assume that the attitude along with being anti-war (on Iraq) is to be anti-Israel.
I regret that my head was counted at an event where such opinions asserted on the audience. I think it was a huge mistake on the part of OCAW, marginalizing people who are pro-Israel, making people uncomfortable and inadvertently forcing people to leave who would otherwise have been enthusiastic participants.
