College Launches First Annual Wellness Fair

Basic training in CPR and free medical screenings were among the health services offered by Oberlin's pre-med students during the College's first annual Wellness Fair. The April 25 event, open to the public, was designed to help reduce preventable deaths through education and training, said college health educator Barbara Mehwald. Every student who participated is a certified emergency medical technician.

"Cardiovascular death is the number-one killer of people over the age of 45. Yet many of these deaths are avoidable," said committee chair Brian Donoghue, a junior neuroscience major from Long Grove, Illinois. "We wanted area residents to take advantage of the Wellness Fair opportunities." The fair program included basic training in CPR by the American Heart Association, and fair participants donated blood to the Lorain County Blood Bank. There were also free medical screenings for high-blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes, and activities for children were scheduled throughout the day.
