Live and Laugh

From hemorrhoids to keeping fit to parenting gay and lesbian children, the 30th Cluster Reunion Classes enjoyed a myriad of lively discussions throughout the weekend. Among them was an interactive presentation by Jacquie Lowell entitled "A-HA! A Creativity and Humor Workout." Lowell '69, teaches improvisational comedy in San Diego and conducts A-Ha! workshops nationwide to help corporate and nonprofit groups develop their creativity and humor.

Both were rampant in a crowded King classroom, as Lowell handed out Ace bandages and challenged the groups to conjure whatever wild uses they could imagine. Conjure they did, everything from the riotous to the ribald. Aha's resounded as the players articulated such items as a landing strip, a phone booth, and a Viagra cure.

"Jacquie's just doing what she did when we were at Oberlin: twisting our minds every way she could," observed Ralf Hotchkiss '69, who has long used Lowell's techniques to brainstorm with other inventors.A-Ha! must work--Hotchkiss founded Whirlwind Wheelchairs International, organized a wheelchair-building network in 25 countries, and received a McArthur "genius" award.
