These news broadcasts are updated daily and might be a useful source for hearing actual Spanish as well as something students can do out of class. I suggest complementing these broadcasts with video taped daily news from the Spanish channal. You might have them first watch the video and then listen carefully for corresponding hot news items from this source.
(CAUTION: some of these recordings are very large files and can take up to an hour to download. Our lab has some files are already stored on the lab's hard disk, so you might try these first.)

The possibilities for teaching Spanish through music are endless. Here's a few brief ideas but this is mostly a resource page for the teacher who is already planning to introduce their class to a specific song or artist and would like to be able to supplement their lesson with either the lyrics, additional biography, grammar lessons that correspond to the song, or any other interesting information about the artist or group. I hope this page in helpful. Please send me your ideas to make this page better.

• Have students listen to your favorite song first without words in front of them and then with the lyrics, but with blanks that they must try and fill in.
• Discuss why a particular grammar point is being used in a specific context in a song. You may want to check out Deirdre Snyder's selection of songs which are divided but grammar point and level of difficulty.
• You might try and combine songs with video clips wherever possible--for the MTV generation!
• Combine listening to songs with reading exercises and interviews with he artists.
• Combine songs with cultural information and discuss why certain ideas appear in so many songs: e.g. uniting the Hispanic world, etc...
• Have students surf these links to find specific information about Latin music, e.g. Where did Salsa and Merengue originate? Maybe have students read and present on one of the many Latin dances: e.g. Tango, Cumbia, Flamenco, Montuno etc... just to name a few. Ask students to find out which dances are popular in which countries and report on it either verbally or in a written composition. The UCLA Latin Music page below is a good place to start them off.
