Fellowship Description

The Watson Foundation is looking for extraordinary people of extraordinary promise. It wants to give these students a chance to throw themselves into a independent project and a year of travel. The idea is that fellows will have the "some surcease from the lockstep of prescribed educational and career patterns in order to explore with thoroughness a particular interest"; they are not looking for amazing final projects; they place their bets on promising people. During their year abroad, Fellows have an unusually, sustained, and demanding opportunity to take stock of themselves, to test their aspirations and abilities, to view their lives and American society in greater perspective, and, concomitantly, to develop a more informed sense of international concern.

The Watson Foundation seeks individuals who demonstrate integrity, imagination, strong ethical character, intelligence, the capacity for vision and leadership, and potential for humane and effective participation in the world community. A candidate's academic record is considered together with those extracurricular activities which reflect both initiative and serious dedication. All graduating seniors (including international students) are eligible for nomination by their institution.

Applications consist of a project proposal, personal statement, and supporting doccuments. See the Guidelines site above. Also check into the Fellowships office.

Laurie McMillin is Watson liaison (King 139A, ext. 58614). Carol Sedgwick (Peters G28) is fellowship coordinator and can also help you with questions.

Applications are due Friday, October 1, 2004, so it is important to get an early start.
