Welcome to this web site which supports Art 103: Approaches to Western Art History for the fall semester of 1996. Course Description. This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of theoretical, analytical, and critical means for approaching a work of art. These may include: formal or stylistic concerns; problems of subject matter and symbolism; the social functions of art and art-making; and the tasks of historian and critic. Each instructor chooses her or his own topics for discussion and assigns applicable readings. This course makes integral use of the Allen Memorial Art Museum.
