NOVEMBER 30, 2001-- Democratic Congressman Sherrod Brown, who represents the 13th District of Ohio, will give a talk at 12:00 P.M. Monday, December 3, in Oberlin College's Lewis Environmental Studies Center Hallock Auditorium.

Mead-Swing Lectureship Series Begins November 26. (November 26, 2001)
NOVEMBER 26, 2001--The Mead-Swing lectureship series entitled "Black Women, Black Religion and Issues of Power" will begin Monday, November 26 at 7:00 P.M. in the Lord lounge of Oberlin's African Heritage House (Lord Saunders), 126 Forest Street. All talks are free and open to the public.

Oberlin College Artist Recital Series Presents The Cleveland Orchestra. (November 16, 2001)
NOVEMBER 16, 2001-- The Cleveland Orchestra performs in the third concert of the 2001-02 Artist Recital series on Sunday, December 2, 2001, at 3:00 P.M. The concert takes place in Finney Chapel, located at the corner of Professor and Lorain Streets in Oberlin.

Library Activist, Nicholson Baker, to Speak at Oberlin College November 10. (November 2, 2001)
NOVEMBER 2, 2001-- Novelist, essayist, and library activist Nicholson Baker will be the featured speaker following the Friends of the Oberlin College Library annual dinner on Saturday, November 10. Baker will speak about his most recent book, Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper. His talk, which is open to the public, begins at 8:00 P.M. in the Root Room of the Carnegie Building on the Oberlin College campus.

New Horizons In Cancer Therapies: A Symposium at Oberlin College November 8. (November 1, 2001)
NOVEMBER 1, 2001-- "New Horizons in Cancer Therapies" is the title of a symposium that will take place in Oberlin College's new science center on Thursday, November 8 at 8:00 P.M. Four alumni, all highly respected leaders in their fields, will return to campus to discuss new advances in cancer research.

Artist Recital Series Presents Concert by the American Brass Quintet. (October 29, 2001)
OCTOBER 29, 2001-- The American Brass Quintet ("ABQ") performs in the second concert of the 2001-02 Artist Recital series on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 8:00 P.M. Philosopher Martha S. Nussbaum to Speak at Oberlin College November 13. (October 29, 2001)
OCTOBER 29, 2001-- "Global Duties: Western Philosophy's Problematic Legacy" is the title of the address to be presented by philosopher Martha Nussbaum at 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 13 in Oberlin's Finney Chapel as part of the College's 2001-2002 Convocation Series.

Oberlin Hosts Conference On Post-Soviet Union Russia on November 9 and 10. (October 23, 2001)
OCTOBER 23, 2001-- The Russian and East European Studies Curricular Committee at Oberlin College will host a conference titled "After the Fall: Reflections on Post-Soviet Russia Ten Years Out." Peter Reddaway, a professor of political science at George Washington University, will make the keynote address, "From Imploding Communism to Darwinian Capitalism: Russia's First Decade of Independence." on November 9 at 8 p.m.

Leading French Virtuoso Daniel Roth Presents Recital on Oberlin's Acclaimed Fisk Organ. (October 22, 2001)
OCTOBER 22, 2001-- The inaugural season for Oberlin College's acclaimed new pipe organ, the Fisk Opus 116, continues as Daniel Roth, widely hailed as one of the leading French organ virtuosos, travels from Paris to offer the first guest recital on the instrument. Roth, organiste titulaire at Saint-Sulpice, the famous Paris church where his predecessors were Charles-Marie Widor, Marcel Dupré and Jean-Jacques Grunenwald, will be in residence at Oberlin for two days.

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music Presents Jazz Concert Nov. 10 and Announces New Scholarship. (October 22, 2001)
OCTOBER 22 , 2001-- A jazz concert showcasing the talents of such notable musicians as James McBride (saxophonist and best-selling author); trumpet player Michael Mossman; bassist Leon Dorsey; and pianist George Caldwell -- all graduates of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music -- will take place Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001 at 8:00 P.M. in Finney Chapel. The event is free and open to the public. Finney Chapel is located at the corner of Lorain (Route 511) and Professor Streets, across from Tappan Square.

The Oberlin Review's Online Version Named Pacemaker Finalist. (October 16, 2001)
OCTOBER 16, 2001--Oberlin College's student newspaper The Oberlin Review has been selected from among 77 entries as one of 26 online Pacemaker finalists by the Associate Collegiate Press (ACP). Winners will be announced October 27, 2001 at the ACP awards ceremony.

St. Petersburg String Quartet and Peter Takacs Perform in Faculty Recital with Live Broadcast on WCLV, 104.9 FM. (October, 8)
OCTOBER 8, 2001-- On Saturday, October 13, 2001, at 8:00 P.M., the Oberlin Conservatory of Music will present the St. Petersburg String Quartet and pianist Peter Takacs in a faculty recital at Finney Chapel. This concert will be broadcast live on WCLV, 104.9 FM, Cleveland's classical music radio station. This marks the first time in the 39-year history of WCLV-FM that a chamber music concert will be broadcast live from Oberlin.

Bishop George Dallas McKinney, Ph.D., D.D to Speak at October Vesper Service. (October, 8)
OCTOBER 8, 2001-- Bishop George McKinney, founder and pastor of St. Stephen's Church of God in Christ (COGIC), will speak on "Grace for Another Year " at Oberlin College's Vesper services October 14 at
4 P.M. in Fairchild Chapel. A reception in Wilder 112 will follow the service.

Sweet Honey in the Rock to Perform at Oberlin College October 14. (October 5, 2001)
OCTOBER 5 , 2001-- The world-renowned Sweet Honey in the Rock will perform at 8 P.M. on October 14 in Oberlin's Finney Chapel as part of the College's 2001-2002 Convocation Series. The event is free and open to the public, however tickets are needed due to limited seating. Congressman Barney Frank Speaks at Oberlin on October 13. (October 4, 2001)
OCTOBER 4 , 2001-- Longtime Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank will deliver a lecture entitled "America and the World" Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 8:00 P.M. in lecture hall A162 at the new science center. Frank will speak at Oberlin as part of the newly established Cole Distinguished Lectureship in Electoral Politics Series.

Oberlin College Hosts Annual Asian Pacific American Conference. (October 3, 2001)
OCTOBER 3, 2001-- Oberlin College will host the annual National East of California Asian-American Conference on the weekend of October 12-14. This year's conference is entitled Locating East of California. The stated purpose of the conference is to "reconsider the contours and practices of Asian Pacific American communities and scholarship east of California"

Visiting Artist and Scholars Series Presents Renowned Art and Design Critic Edward Gomez. (October 1, 2001)
OCTOBER 1, 2001--Edward Gomez will present two free, public talks Wednesday, October 3, at the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies. Gomez--an author, graphic designer, art and design critc and environmental activist--will lecture as part of the Visiting Artist and Scholarship Series sponsored by the Oberlin College Art Department and the Allen Memorial Art Museum. At 12:00 p.m. his first presentation will address "The Politics of the Environment: The Hudson River" and at 4:35 p.m. his second presentation will examine "Critical Issues in Contemporary Art."

Oberlin Conservatory Presents an Orchestra Concert for Area Students and Their Families. (September 27, 2001)
SEPTEMBER 27, 2001-- On Saturday, October 6, at 11 a.m., the Oberlin Conservatory will present a children's concert, Classics for Community, for area students (K-12) and their families. The event will feature the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Paul Polivnick, and will be followed by a luncheon sponsored by Families Yes!. The program will include excerpts from Rossini's Semiramide Overture, Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major, featuring pianist Monique Duphil, and Mozart's "Prague" Symphony, No. 38.

Performing and Visual Arts College Fair Coming to Oberlin on October 10. (September 25, 2001)
SEPTEMBER 25, 2001-- Students interested in continuing their education in the areas of music, dance, theater, visual arts, graphic design and other related fields are invited to attend the Oberlin/Cleveland Performing and Visual Arts College Fair on Wednesday, October 10 from 7-9 pm in the Root Room of the Carnegie Building, on the campus of Oberlin College.

Author to Discuss Being "Black, White and Jewish: Growing Up Multiracial in America September 20. (September 22, 2001)
SEPTEMBER 11, 2001--Noted author Rebecca Walker will discuss her newest memoir, Black, White and Jewish: Growing Up Multiracial in America, on Thursday, September 20, at 8 p.m. in Finney Chapel in a free, public talk.

Oberlin College Dedicates New C.B. Fisk Organ With Live Broadcasts of Concerts on WCLV 104.9 FM. (September 20, 2001)
SEPTEMBER 21 , 2001-- On Friday, September 28, Oberlin College's Finney Chapel will resonate with the sounds of a new, 4,014 pipe organ, played in concert for the first time. The dedication of The Kay Africa Memorial organ, built by C. B. Fisk, Inc., of Gloucester, Mass., is the centerpiece of a weekend of concerts and events.

Oberlin College Announces Artist Recital Series for 2001-2002. (September 12, 2001)
SEPTEMBER 12 , 2001-- For 123 years, the venerable Artist Recital Series at Oberlin College has brought distinguished, world-renowned musicians and ensembles to Finney Chapel at Oberlin's campus in northeast Ohio. Subscription tickets are now available for the seven-concert, 2001-2002 season, which features pianist Richard Goode, the American Brass Quintet, the Cleveland Orchestra, cellist Janos Starker, the Tokyo String Quartet, soprano Barbara Bonney, and Cleveland's Baroque Orchestra, Apollo's Fire. The Artist Recital Series is sponsored by the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College with the support of the Friends of the Artist Recital Series. Media sponsorship is provided by WCLV, 104.9-FM, Cleveland's classical music radio station.

Oberlin Art Professor, Johnny Coleman, Art Installation on Display at Here Here Gallery. (September 10, 2001)
SEPTEMBER 10, 2001-- "Rememory," a sound installation composed by artist Johnny Coleman, associate professor of studio art and African American studies at Oberlin College, will be on view from September 21 through November 18 at the Here Here Gallery in Cleveland, located at 1305 Euclid Ave. The exhibition is part of "Oberlin at the Here Here Gallery," an ongoing Oberlin arts satellite in Cleveland. Oberlin's Office of Sponsored Programs and by the Here Here Foundation Funding provided funding for the exhibition.

Maverick Artists/Visionary Educators Series Kicks Off at Oberlin College. (September 7, 2001)
SEPTEMBER 7, 2001-- A high wire artist, Argentine experimental music, and Star Wars-inspired choreography are among the free, public programs offered this semester by the Emerging Arts Program at Oberlin College. The performances are part of the "Maverick Artists/Visionary Educators" Series, sponsored by the Henry Luce Initiative in the Emerging Arts.

Oberlin College Organizes Latino Conference Hecho in America" Spotlighting New Scholarships in Latino Studies. (September 6, 2001)
SEPTEMBER 6, 2001--On September 15, 2001 the Department of History and Oberlin College will hold a conference that will focus on a wealth of fascinating new studies in the Latino world, including sociology, history, politics and literature. The conference will begin at 1:00 p.m. in Wilder Hall room 101. It is free and open to the public.û

Bookmobile Rolls into Town. (September 6, 2001)
SEPTEMBER 6, 2001--The Mobilivre-Bookmobile project, a 1959 Airstream Overlander filled with artist books, zines and independent publications, will roll into Oberlin Monday, September 10. Coordinated in part by two Oberlin graduates--Ginger Brooks Takahashi '99 and Fereshteh Toosi '98--the bookmobile project was started to create a network for artistic communities and to bring examples of independent media to people who might not otherwise have access to the alternative publications.

Oberlin College Sponsors Journalism Conference September 15 and 16. (September 6, 2001)
SEPTEMBER 6, 2001--Oberlin College will host the campus's first journalism conference Saturday, September 15 and Sunday, September 16. The conference will feature speakers from local and national publications, and workshops to help individuals prepare for a career in journalism.
