MAY 23, 2001--Robert K. Dodson, dean of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, announces the appointment to Oberlin's faculty of Roger Chase as associate professor of viola, effective July 1, 2001.

Oberlin College Senior Receives a Fellowship From the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation. (May 21, 2001)
MAY 21, 2001--David Oertel, a senior from Hamilton, Ohio, has been awarded a graduate fellowship from the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation. Oertel is the first Oberlin student to receive an award from the Hertz foundation. This fall, he will begin study toward a Ph.D. in physical chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Bishop Anthony M. Pilla to Present Oberlin Baccalaureate Address May 27. (May 16, 2001)
MAY 16, 2001--The Most Reverend Anthony M. Pilla, the ninth bishop of Cleveland, will present Oberlin College’s 2001 baccalaureate address at 4 P.M. Sunday, May 27, in Oberlin's Finney Chapel at the corner of Professor and Lorain streets. The baccalaureate service is free and open to the public.

Oberlin College Sophomore Wins Goldwater Scholarship. (May 16, 2001)
MAY 16, 2001--Jeremy Van Cleve, a sophomore mathematics major from Santa Fe, New Mexico, has been chosen as one of 302 undergraduate students from the 50 states and Puerto Rico to receive an award from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. He is one of two Goldwater Scholars at Oberlin College this year, selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,164 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The one- and two-year scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

MAY 16, 2001--Adam Philips, a junior neuroscience major from Milford, Delaware, has been chosen as one of 302 undergraduate students from the 50 states and Puerto Rico to receive an award from the Barry M. Katherine Blauvelt of St. Cloud, MN, Selected as 2001 Truman Scholar. (May 14, 2001)
MAY 14, 2001--Oberlin College junior Katherine Blauvelt is one of 80 students chosen from 56 undergraduate institutions nationwide to receive a $30,000 scholarship from the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. The finalists, selected from among 592 candidates nominated by 303 colleges and universities, were chosen by 19 independent selection panels on the basis of leadership potential, intellectual ability, and the likelihood of "making a difference."

MAY 9, 2001--"Oberlin at the Here Here Gallery"--a month-long exhibition and performing arts series opening Saturday at the downtown venue--will mark the establishment of an Oberlin College arts satellite in the greater Cleveland area.

April 25, 2001--Brooklyn's They Might Be Giants (TMBG), one of alternative rock's most enduring and innovative bands, will perform at Oberlin College Saturday, May 5. Tony-Award Winning Drama Side Man To Be Performed April 26, 28, and 29 at Oberlin. (April 19, 2001)
April 19, 2001--The Oberlin Student Theater Association (OSTA) will bring the 1999 Tony Award-winning memory play Side Man to northern Ohio April 26, 28 and 29, when it stages Warren Leight's 1999 Broadway hit at Oberlin College.

Oberlin Comedy Improv Group Hosts April 20-22 Conference for Junior High, High School, and College Students. (April 12, 2001)
April 12, 2001--Northeast Ohio high school, junior high and college students are invited to attend a Comedy Improv Conference to be held Friday through Sunday, April 20-22 by The Improv Coalition, a group of Oberlin comedy-improv community members.

The Black River Theater Company to Hold Open Auditions for Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. (April 6, 2001)
April 6, 2001--The Black River Theater Company (BRTC), Oberlin’s Free Family Theater, will hold open auditions for its summer production of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night Friday, April 13 in Oberlin and Saturday, April 14 in Cleveland Heights. Twins and actors of color are especially encouraged to audition. Please prepare a Shakespearean monologue. For an appointment or directions call (440) 775-8151.

Empty Bowls Meal to Highlight This Year's Hunger Awareness Weekend. (April 4, 2001)
April 4, 2001-- A simple meal of soup and bread will be served in handmade ceramic bowls on Sunday, April 8 at 1:00 P.M. in Tappan Square. Tickets for the event can be purchased for $5 at the Wilder Student Union front desk. The event is the result of the Winter Term Project of Oberlin College student Adrian Anagnost of Wilmington, North Carolina. Anagnost hopes showing the community a typical meal of those enveloped in poverty will help raise awareness of their plight. Oberlin College students made the ceramic bowls to be used during the meal. Attendees may keep the bowls as a reminder of world hunger.

UC Professor Janos to Give Two Oscar Jaszi Memorial Lectures at Oberlin College. (April 4, 2001)
April 4, 2001-- Two Oscar Jaszi Memorial Lectures under the general title From Eastern Empire to Western Hegemony: East Central Europe, 1945-2000 will be given April 11 and 12 by Andrew Janos, professor of political science at the University of California, Berkeley. Free and open to the public, both events are in the Oberlin College’s Wilder Hall, 135 West Lorain St.

Roland Pandolfi Joins Horn Faculty of Oberlin Conservatory of Music. (April 3, 2001)
April 3, 2001--Robert Dodson, dean of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, announces the appointment to Oberlin's faculty of Roland Pandolfi, principal horn player with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Pandolfi joins Oberlin as professor of horn, effective July 1, 2001.

Climate Change Lecture Series to Take Place at Oberlin College During April and May. (March 30, 2001)
MARCH 30, 2001--Beginning April 10, four of the country’s leading experts on global climate change and its implications will come to the campus of Oberlin College to take part in a free, public program titled The 2001 Climate Change Speakers’ Series.

NEH Grant Supports Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at Oberlin College. (March 27, 2001)
MARCH 23, 2001--Oberlin College has received a $500,000 challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to endow the Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. The grant is one of just 10 challenge awards made nationally by the NEH this year.

Author David Bradley to Read From Fiction, Lecture at Oberlin College April 2 and 3. (March 23, 2001)
MARCH 23, 2001--David Bradley, author of South Street (1975) and the Chaneysville Incident (1982), will be on the Oberlin College campus Monday, April 2, and Tuesday, April 3. Bradley will present a reading of his fiction Monday at 7:30 P.M., in King 106. On Tuesday he will deliver a lecture, "The Function of Lynching in Contemporary Society," in Wilder 101 at 4:45 P.M. Both events are free and open to the public.

Native American Anthropologists to Talk About the Symbolism of American Mascots. (March 23, 2001)
MARCH 23, 2001--"The United States of Amnesia: Mascots in the Symbolic Economy of American Nationalism" is the topic of a speech to be given Wednesday, April 4, 8 P.M. in the Root Room of the Carnegie Building, 53 West Lorain Street at Oberlin College.

Indigenous Women's Series to Take Place at Oberlin College During April. (March 21, 2001)
MARCH 21, 2001--Oberlin College will present the 2001 Indigenous Women's Series April 3, 12, 19, and 23. "The series was created to increase institutional awareness and promote visibility of indigenous American Studies in the curriculum," says kt shorb, the Asian-Pacific-American community coordinator at the College's Multicultural Resource Center. "It will address issues surrounding the history of U.S. and European imperialism in the Americas and the Pacific Islands."

Oberlin Schools-College Partnership Announces New Scholarship to Benefit Local High School Graduates. (March 20, 2001)
MARCH 20, 2001--Oberlin College is offering full-tuition scholarships beginning with the 2001-02 academic year for qualified graduates of Oberlin High School. Superintendent of Schools James Gray and Oberlin College President Nancy Dye announced the new scholarship today.

Violinist Milan Vitek Joins String Faculty of Oberlin Conservatory of Music. (March 16, 2001)
MARCH 16, 2001--Robert Dodson, dean of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, announces the appointment of violinist Milan Vitek to Oberlin's string faculty. Vitek was bestowed RD (Knight of Dannenbrog, 1st Order) in 1999 by Her Royal Highness Margrethe II, the Queen of Denmark, for outstanding contributions to the cultural life of that country. Since 1974, he has been professor of violin at Denmark's Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen. Vitek, who was a visiting professor at Oberlin during the 1993-94 academic year, joins the Oberlin faculty as professor of violin, effective July 1, 2001.\

MARCH 16, 2001--Judith Weisenfeld brings another installment to the Mead-Swing Lecture Series with her talk entitled "Saturday Sinners and Sunday Saints: Narratives of Communal Identity in 1930s and 1940s Race Movies" Monday, March 19, at 7 P.M. in Room 106 of the King Building on Oberlin College's campus (corner of West College and North Professor streets).

MARCH 13, 2001--Oberlin College’s student newspaper The Oberlin Review was founded in 1872 and is one of the oldest continuing student publications in the country.

MARCH 13, 2001--Franz Wright, prize-winning poet and translator, will give a free reading of his poetry Monday, March 19 at 4:45 P.M. in Room 106 of the King Building on the Oberlin College campus (corner of West College and North Professor streets).

Hip-Hop Conference to Feature Jouranlist Davey D as Keynote Speaker. (March 9, 2001)
MARCH 9, 2001--Hip-Hop 101, this year’s conference embracing Hip-Hop’s origin as a voice for urban Black youth will be held the weekend of March 16, 17 and 18 with Hip-Hop journalist, Davey D headlining as the keynote speaker.

MARCH 8, 2001--A Nepali women’s rights lecture series is coming to Oberlin College March 13 and 14 through the efforts of The People Tree, Inc., a nonprofit organization, in collaboration with the Women’s Foundation of Nepal and the Oberlin Shansi Memorial Association.

Public Forum to Discuss Oberlin's Historic Role in the African National Congress. (March 8, 2001)
MARCH 8, 2001--A public forum on history, heritage and film entitled "In Search of John Langalibalele Dube: Oberlin Reconnects with Its Historic Role in the Freedom Struggles of the African National Congress" will be held March 17 at the Oberlin Public Library.

Oberlin Percussion Group Embarks on Mini-Tour. (March 8, 2001)
MARCH 8, 2001--The Oberlin Percussion Group (OPG), a student ensemble from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College known for its premieres and performances of new percussion works, embarks this month on a mini-tour of eastern states. The group's itinerary includes a performance with renowned violinist Gregory Fulkerson, Oberlin Conservatory professor of violin, at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City.

MARCH 1, 2001--Peggy McIntosh, a nationally known proponent of gender-fair and multicultural curricula, will join Oberlin College faculty and staff members for a panel discussion, "A Panel of Oberlin Scholars and Peggy McIntosh Discuss White Privilege as an Impediment to Education." The free public event will take place Monday, March 12, at 8:00 P.M. in Wilder Main.

FEBRUARY 28, 2001--"Social Justice in the Bush Era" is the title of a community address to be given on March 8 in Finney Chapel by cleric and activist Tony Campolo. The talk is part of a three-day slate of events presented by the Oberlin Christian Alumni Association and the Office of the Chaplains.

FEBRUARY 16, 2001--Cutting-edge visual artists, conductors, choreographers, and performance groups will present works-in-progress at Oberlin College this semester.
