More College Rhythm needed
To the Editors: I am concerned about the lack of coverage on Colors of Rhythm in the Review last week. First, the Review did not mention the Japanese dance group, Natsu Matsuri and “A Medley on Tahitian Songs.” Also, the article was placed at the bottom of the Arts section, and did not include any photographs. Colors of Rhythm is not just cultural entertainment. It is one of the biggest events that bring all the People of Color communities together. Colors of Rhythm was created in 1997 by students to provide a space for people of color to express their art, because there was no other place to do so within the College curriculum. Unfortunately, this College still does not have classes and professors for all the dances that were performed at the show. We re-enacted the enthusiasm and the liveliness of Japanese summer festivals, where as a community, we dance and hope for good harvest in the fall. It was performed by 10 dancers and three drummers, shouting a cheer of encouragement as we danced and hit the drums. I would like to acknowledge all the performers and supporters of Colors of Rhythm. It was a phenomenal show, and I hope the College continues to value and support the different forms of art that exist on campus. –Satoko Kanahara |
