A Pregnancy Resource Forum will be held this Thursday featuring a pro-life speaker.

Organized by Students United for Reproductive Freedoms and Oberlin Pro-life Union of Students, the April 21 forum will be led by Sally Winn of Feminists for Life of America, an organization that advocates the elimination of the root causes that influence women’s decision to choose abortion. Representatives from various areas in the College will also speak on the panel.

SURF and OPLUS want the forum to address the lack of pregnancy resources for Oberlin students.

“I’ve noticed I don’t really see pregnant women on campus,” OPLUS member Rick Hoffman said, “even though there are lots of people having sex and not all of it is ‘protected.’ The Pregnancy Resource Forum takes it from the stance of women already freely choosing to have a full pregnancy, and focuses on how we can improve resources.”

Student Health Services estimates between zero and five students every year seek pregnancy, resources through the College.

Health Services’ estimates may be offset by the fact that students can go directly to local resources such as Family Planning Services of Lorain County. The local organization also holds twice-weekly clinics on Health Services’ premises.

If a student becomes pregnant and seeks campus resources, she can go to Student Health Services for testing, counseling, referrals and other services that are covered by the Student Health Policy.

SURF and OPLUS claim that Oberlin should provide institutional support for women to carry their pregnancies to full term and still remain full-time students.

SURF member Anna Clausen wants an affordable housing arrangement for families, daycare options and classes at a wide range of times to accommodate student parents.

The Pregnancy Resource Forum takes place against the backdrop of Sunday’s March for Women’s Lives in DC. The demonstration will protest systematic threats to women’s reproductive freedoms.

“[The march and the forum] are especially important now,” Clausen said. “The current presidential administration [has been] cutting funding for key reproductive programs, whether that be comprehensive sexual education classes, abortion access, etc.”

The Pregnancy Resources Forum will take place on Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m. in Craig Lecture Hall.
