Tennis wins one, loses two
Last weekend the men’s tennis team competed in the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA) tournament, hosted on Oberlin courts. After losing in the first two rounds, the Yeomen won in their final match. In the first round of the tournament, Oberlin faced conference opponent the College of Wooster, losing 6-1. The Yeomen fell in each match except for the number three singles, which junior Mark Knee won in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6. The Yeomen did not fare any better against Hope College. The Yeomen lost 4-1, with senior Jamie Frankel picking up the only win, although the number five and six singles did not complete their matches. In non-conference matches, if the victor has already been decided the remaining matches can be cancelled. On Sunday, the Yeomen won 5-0 over NCAC opponent Wabash College. Oberlin won all seven matches that were played, four singles and three doubles. Frankel and senior Marian Bocek won the number one and two singles by the same margin, 6-4, 6-1. Juniors Nick Ogren and Knee were victorious in the three and four slots, Ogren won 6-4, 6-0 and Knee won 6-1, 6-0. Frankel and Bocek won 8-2 against Wabash’s number one doubles. Ogren and Knee also won in the two slot, 8-6. Sophomore Jimmy Rosenheim and first-year Arthur Zeyda cleaned up in the number three doubles, 8-2. Doubles teams have played at a high level on a consistent basis this year. “Doubles teams have been real solid this year,” Knee said. “We’ve been playing well so we can place high in the conference tournament. After the GLCA tournament, the Yeomen stood firm at 12-5 overall and 4-2 in NCAC play. That record leaves them at fifth place in the conference. The Yeomen have two matches before the conference tournament. They will go to Meadville, Pa. to take on Allegheny College in a NCAC match this Saturday at 1 p.m. The following Tuesday the men will visit Denison University for another conference match at 4:30 p.m. |
