Position now unavailable to Expository Writing Program
The College Faculty Council failed to approve a tenure track position which would have been available to the Expository Writing Program's Visiting Assistant Professor Wendy Hesford. She has been offered a job at the University of Indiana's English department. Many students were upset about the decision to drop Hesford, and there have been petitions to keep her on staff.
Students overwhelmingly unhappy with health services
Results from Student Health surveys were completed and released recently. The surveys were created by members of the Student Senate, and asked questions about how satisfied the student body was with the quality of health care in Oberlin. Many were dissatisfied with the service and personnel in the Oberlin Clinic and Allen Memorial Hospital.
ENVS building site chosen
A site has been chosen for the Environmental Studies Center. It is planned to be built south of Harkness. Accessibility, the availability of sunlight compared to the alternative site, and distance from the highway were all key factors in the decision making process.
Lost charters and unfinished business completed
Bill Bess, director of Security at Arizona State University, visited Oberlin as a consultant for upcoming changes to be made in the Campus' Security. He spoke with many administrators and students, and toured the campus to try to get a feel for any changes that could be made. At forums with both Bess and Interim Director of Security Joe DiChristina, students brought up concerns with the way security and the Oberlin Police Department interact with the students.
Obies get chance to perform in Opus
Oberlin students broke into pictures. Three of Oberlin's musicians appear in the film Mr. Holland's Opus. They played small parts in orchestra scenes, and got to meet Richard Dreyfuss during the period that the movie was being shot in Portland, Ore.
Only one introduction level course is mandatory for major The English department is planning some changes in the courses required for the English major. There will be only one introductory level class required instead of two, and all majors will be required to take the only 200 level course, Critical Methods.
