Ijeoma J. Anusionwu

I am a female student from Western Africa majoring in Economics and minoring in French and Computer Science. I am currently directing and choreographing a 40-member cast Nigerian play that will be performed this semester. Also, I choreographed a very applauded Nigerian dance performed at Essence '96. These by themselves not only vouch for my leadership, organizational and people skills, but I also perfected them as they familiarized me with people of a different background, acquainting me with mannerisms and values which didn't necessarily agree with the culture I was raised in prior to my arrival in the U.S. my freshman year.

Additionally, considering I had absolutely no experience in Theatre and Dance before embarking on these projects, affirms my faith in making things happen out of nothing and my belief that absolutely 'anything' is possible once there is a strong drive of determination.

I am a very active member of the African Students Association and the International Students' Organization. I promise not only good leadership but also a diverse outlook. There is no doubt in my mind that I am a very qualified candidate for Senior Class President. Thank you.

Don't vote for me.

Instead, please, vote against apathy.

I'm a good candidate, mostly, I think, because I love our school and our class.

But, then, I'm just one of many: amazing people are to this school as soil is to the cornfields that surround us.

So, please, pick one of us amazing candidates, and just vote!

Alexander Elisa

I am currently a junior hoping to become a senior by the next semester. I am a psychology major from New York City and for the last five semesters I have resided here on campus.

As far as my Oberlin experience goes, so far I can't complain. Last year I was one of the first Orientation Leaders that Oberlin has ever had. I started out my first year as a beverage runner for CDS and I then served as student manager for two consecutive semesters. Presently, I am assisting Associate Dean of Students Kenneth Holmes. Some of my most cherished experiences however, have taken place on stage: Gospel at Colonus, Musical Union, Essence.

In the semesters to come I intend to keep expanding my horizons and experiences here in Oberlin. It is my opportunity to display my open mind, progressive thinking and overall skills before you all. I am a positive individual and I do what I set my mind to. I feel that it will be a most rewarding experience for both me and those who I encounter as president. I now stand before you soliciting your votes and wishing you the best for the semesters to come.

It is theoretically possible to find out the names of everyone in your class at Oberlin and then stalk them until you're friends with everyone. Then you'd know them all. But I sure don't and I don't know of anybody who does.

What I can say is that I'm invested in as many areas of campus life as I can be. Whether it be playing intramural basketball, circling the halls of the Con looking for a practice room, doing midnight crew in Old Barrows co-op, or making a fool of myself dancing in the 'Sco, I've been there. That doesn't mean I can represent all those things equally in time or experience, but I know and care about all of them. If knowledge about the 16,000 aspects of Oberlin is a qualification for president, I think I'm as close to qualified as anyone.

Amy Gunzenhauser

I am a theater major here in the wonderful world of Oberland. I have participated in a couple of plays here and ran track. I am a pretty ordinary student. I work hard and I like to see positive change. Acting as senior class president would be very rewarding and challenging for me in my time left at Oberlin. So please consider me for senior class president. I can't make any unrealistic promises but I can promise that I will dedicate my time and energy to making our senior year productive and positive. Thank you.

What I've learned from some of my activities at Oberlin:

Working in Admissions-what Oberlin is trying to accomplish and what it wants to be.

Volunteering at The Lorain Free Clinic - the importance of Oberlin's effect on surrounding areas.

Indoor track-that athletes don't get nearly enough recognition for dedication and hard work.

Health Plan Board-to effectively communicate with administration.

Standing Committee on Pluralism and Equality (SCOPE)-that Oberlin isn't perfect, but faculty, administration, and students can work to make it better.

OSCA Environmental Concerns Committee-that local foods rock.

From this list, you have no way of knowing that I am caring, engaging, attentive, and qualified to represent you. Please, e-mail me (and the other candidates) and ask the questions which YOU want to evaluate candidates for your class president.

Melissa A. Hemmings

My freshman year, I started the Students of Caribbean Ancestry organization because I saw a need for education on the issues which face people of Caribbean descent at Oberlin College. I feel that my experience of being the head of this diverse student organization for the past three years has prepared me to be effective and successful in other leadership positions. Part of the experience of being a class officer would entail having the passion, the openness and drive to serve a variety of people. Working with S.O.C.A. has taught me how to listen to concerns and how to follow up these concerns with action. It has taught me how to pool other people's strengths as well as my own in order to reach a common goal. I have also been extremely passionate about seeking out ways that Oberlin College can ensure the retention and matriculation of as many members of the Class of 1999 as possible. Some of my other activities include: West African Dance Diaspora, Abusua, Voices for Christ and the Biology Majors Committee. I am ready and willing to accept the responsibility and the opportunity to accurately represent the voices of my class.

Suraiya Ishaque

I am currently a first-semester senior pursuing a double major in English and Third World Studies and am an international student from Karachi, Pakistan. As a member of SASA and as an assistant editor and contributor of DESI (The SASA college publication), I have had the opportunity to absorb a great deal about the South Asian community and feel that there is a need not only to alleviate the apathy surrounding the organization but also to raise the level of consciousness about South Asian issues. My job as a fund phoner puts me into close contact with alumni and the perceptions of Oberlin outside of our little haven are not always as we hope. My capacity to argue varying perspectives in an effective manner has armed me with the necessary tact for mediating difficult situations that a class president requires. Although I share the enthusiasm and strong affection that most of my peers have for Oberlin, I believe that there are important changes that need to be made. One cannot go on without removing the veil of misconception and misinformation that has, at times become apparent here. Things need to be brought out in the arena of informed public debate and I intend to do that as class president.

Assistant to Bill Stackman, Associate Dean of Students, where I encourage communication between students, administrators, and faculty. Helped create the Women's Resource Center and the Student Union Art Committee; Leadership Committee Member; Student Union Board Committee Member (committee formed to give students power over all functions of the Union). Facilitate Domestic Partnership meetings.

Judicial Board Member. Former Student Senator, Communications Chair. Former member of numerous faculty committees, including Domestic Partnership SLC sub-Committee, which I constructed. International Studies sub-Committee Member which established a Concentration to debut in the 1998-99 catalogue. Presently I organize the Bi Women's Rap Group. Motown DJ at the 'Sco. Co-author, 1998 Drag Ball Bible.

My ongoing commitment to queer issues and developing communication between students and staff will establish the position of Senior Class President as more than simply a token prop of the administration.

Raquel Olivo

At Oberlin, I have had the honor of being involved in many parts of the campus. During my year and a half as Co-chair of La Alianza Latina I had the opportunity to work not only with the Latino community but with many other representatives of different communities on campus. My position at the Office of Admissions has allowed me to interact with many prospective students, aiding them in choosing the correct school. In addition, I have learned about the admissions process, Oberlin in general and about what my role in Oberlin has been thus far. The RC position in Asia House has made me realize that a community is not an instantaneous combustion that occurs at some point but an element that takes time and work to develop and that is essential in students' lives.

Although all of these different activities seem not to have much in common they are essential pieces that have both shaped and increased my growth at Oberlin. These activities are what I believe give me the qualifications for the position of class officer. I have interacted with many different people at all levels and it is my belief that the class officer should have the ability to exchange ideas or thought with anyone. Thank you very much.

Absolutely nothing is in a title but the dedication and hard work one puts into his/her duties. If elected as Class Officer, working hard and dedicating myself to my duties will be a top priority. I will guarantee that not only my ideas, but also other ideas from students of the Class of '99 will be represented in my decisions as class officer.

I have taken active roles in various organizations throughout my three years at Oberlin. I have gained a well-rounded and diverse knowledge of the general student body and campus by means of the Judicial Board, Football and Track, La Alianza, working at the Computing Center, initiating Oberlin Future Lawyers, active in Culture Media and tutoring. My involvement in Habitat for Humanity, Green Peace, and Latino/a struggles have contributed to my support of Oberlin's activism and progressivism as a powerful force helping us change the world. All I ask of the Class of '99 is to vote for someone you truly believe will represent our class.

Sara M. Selig

I am strongly identified with Oberlin College and its communities and have been involved in numerous activities. My on-campus involvement has included the following: CRO in Johnson House; worked with the college Security Department to improve safety on campus; Lab assistant in both the Neuro-Endocrinology Lab and the Developmental Psychology Lab; Judaic and Near East Studies (JNES) Program Planning Committee; Honor Code Committee; Tutors List for two classes; Research Methods and Developmental Psychology.

My off-campus activities have focused on weekly volunteer work at the Lorain County Free Clinic, where, in addition to helping with patients and office duties, I have helped with community outreach and initiated community partnerships that are enabling the clinic's records to become computerized. Additional off-campus experiences include my spending this semester in Zimbabwe on a junior year study abroad program.

I believe my strong commitment to Oberlin College and its communities, combined with the experiences I have had in a wide range of activities and roles, would enable me to be an effective senior class officer. Should I be elected to this leadership position, I will do my best to live up to the high standards of the college.

Whitney M. Smith

Hi, I want to be an officer for the Class of 1999. During my time at Oberlin, I have been involved in a wide range of activities that have demanded both organizational and leadership skills. I have been a varsity basketball player a student senator, an Orientation Leader, a tutor, and a student assistant to the Secretary of the College. In each of these forums, I have been asked to demonstrate my ability to work with students and professionals alike to accomplish important tasks. As a class officer, one is responsible for planning activities throughout the year as well as "Senior Week." One also has to work closely with many offices on campus including the Secretary's Office and the Office of the President. This job demands time, energy, ability, and enthusiasm - all of which I can provide, if you elect me as your Senior Class Officer.
