Class of 1999 Officer Candidates
Class Trustee Candidates
I first came to Oberlin in 1992. I couldn't change the world and I expected Oberlin to be some fully functioning utopia. When I realized there were unique problems on campus I dropped out. Two years later, a little wiser, I returned to school.
I found a lot of hopelessness among our students. It's disheartening when a freshman tells me in my senior year that I am optimistic and hopeful about OC's future.
According to the 1977 mission statement OC aims for its students:...to expand their social awareness, social responsibility, and capacity for moral judgment...to prepare them for intelligent and useful response to the present and future demands of society.
Graduating qualifies me as an alum. My hope and desire to aid in executing positive change qualifies me as a class officer candidate. Thank you.
After four years at Oberlin, I can say that I have given and received a great deal from this community. I am an Art History and Studio Art major, and my organizational experiences include: Founder/Committee member, Wilder Student Union Art gallery; Treasurer, Oberlin Musical Theater Association; Booking Agent/Performer, Oberlin Obertones; Founder/Director, O.C.appella Festival; Student Senator; Vice President, North Residence Hall.
My work experiences at Oberlin include: Assistant to the Vice President (Writing grants and creating tactile maps for Oberlin's visually impaired students, faculty and community members); Admissions Senior Intern (Interviewing students and organizing special events.)
As the tenth member of my family to attend Oberlin, I have practically grown up in this community. Several members of my family have remained active with the school as class officers. I am quite committed to this institution, and would like to follow in my families footsteps by serving our class upon graduation.
As a Creative Writing major, I have worked closely, at one time or another, with the following organizations: Hillel, OPIRG, Senate, SOBIE (Students Overcoming Barriers in Education), the faculty committees of OBIE (Overcoming Barriers in Instruction and Education) and FAN (Facilities Accessibilities Needs). I have been on three hiring committees; that for the associate dean, the Counseling Center and the Residential Life and Services staff. I was the co-chair of SOBIE for a year and worked closely with Student Academic Services, Security, the President's Office and the Dean of Student Life. I have been both a CRO and an RC. Having had all these experiences, both positive and negative throughout, I believe that I have found the tools to aid Oberlin College in the future and to act as a responsible, assertive liaison for the Class of 1998.
We're going to graduate from this school and we have a vested interest in making sure it is the best it can be.
Traditionally the role of class President is limited to writing a letter a year and lunching with some administrators. Often the lobbying power of new alumni goes entirely unrecognized. That's why I'm offering myself as someone good at both lobbying and listening, as someone who can be effective and passionate as your representative, not merely as a kid with an honorary title.
Those who know me know I believe in Oberlin's unique simultaneous commitment to social responsibility and radical individualism, without either of which Oberlin falters, but which together help ensure Oberlin's destiny of greatness. Please give me the opportunity to continue the work I started as a Student Senator, President of the ACLU, and LEC in OSCA. Call or e-mail me if you'd like to talk.
My strongest qualifications for alumni class president are not outwardly apparent by reading a list of the activities I have engaged in over the past four years. Rather, the strength of my candidacy is the attitude and persistence I've demonstrated while excelling as a student, faculty committee member, student senator, peer tutor, dorm host, and athlete among others. My strongest qualifications are the enthusiasm, energy, and positive spirit I bring to all my endeavors and my deep belief that Oberlin's uniqueness stems from a definition of success which incorporates our political, environmental, and community values. As we strive to make an impact after we leave Oberlin, it will be vital, professionally and personally, to not only maintain but strengthen the strong web we have established. I'm excited by the chance to work towards this goal as alumni class president.
I would like to serve as President because I understand Oberlin life from a variety of perspectives. I served as co-chair of Oberlin Film Series last year. I organized the Student Film Festival. I've taken classes in both the College and the Conservatory. From writing for the Review, to eating in a co-op to eating in CDS, from serving as a CRO to working at Wilder Desk for three years, my experiences at Oberlin have given me an understanding of the diversity of Oberlin student backgrounds. I've spent much of my time volunteering in the larger community. I organized meetings between the elderly people of Kendal and Oberlin students. I spent my first two years volunteering at a local preschool. I think my background in leadership, volunteering, and working at Oberlin have given me the experience to represent the eclectic interests of Oberlin students.
