You Can Say that Again

I was too tired to throw a good fast ball. Maybe they were looking for something faster.

When did you start playing tennis?
I was five years old and my mom took me to the guy who gave lessons to her. I'm two handed on both sides and they taught me that because I wasn't strong enough to hold the racket.

Did you have much success in high school tennis?
I wasn't like the Wippal Champion, that was the state championship, but I did really well where I was. I was pretty much undefeated for four years. Our school wasn't up in the big level. We played a little bit more hickville schools. One school had a cornfield across the street.

Do you remember your best match?
My best college match would have to be Denison last year when we were in Conferences. A great match is where you're able to play your own strokes and overcome your opponent.

Do you remember your worst match?
I hate losing tough matches. So when I feel like I'm there but not able to close out the point I think, 'If only I had another shot over the net.'

How do you feel this season is going?
It's going pretty well. The team camaraderie is really good. We're friends on and off the court. We've played tough teams and with each match we're getting even better. I hope we can do well when it comes to conference time. I'm happy with it and happy to be a part of it.

Do you have any superstitions or rituals you perform before a match?
My doubles partner will say I get really intense. I have a little book that I read before I play called "Tennis Talk" that I keep in my bag and I do a lot of mental imaging.

What is your best strength in your matches?
I'm an all-court player because I have the ability to come to the net and I have strong ground strokes. It gives me variety in my game. It's a strength to be able to come to the net, but I know I can rely on my ground stroke too.

Does it help when there are spectators at your matches?
Definitely. Because it keeps the intensity up. When someone is there and cheering, tennis is like a show. You're responsible for yourself, but spectators add an effect.

Who is your favorite professional tennis player?
It's always been Monica Seles and even now with the guts to come back. I always liked her style. She had the grit.

What's your favorite Grand Slam tournament?
Oh man, I watch them all. But probably the French.
