Interns hired in the MRC for next school year

The Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) has hired two interns to replace Carmen Mitchell and Kara Wick who are leaving this year. Mitchell and Wick have worked at the MRC for one year.

The new African American Community Coordinator will be graduating senior Ntombi Peters and the new LGBT community coordinator will be Matthew Hayden, also a graduating senior.

"We are really happy with the new interns," MRC director Shilpa Dave said. "We're really happy with the results of the search."

Mitchell is planning to attend graduate school at UCLA. Wick is also going to California.

"Though we would love to have them back, they have other plans," Dave said.

The positions begin July 15.

Both Adrian Batista and Michelle Shim will be returning next year. Batista is the Latino Community coordinator and Shim is Asian American community coordinator.

Associate Dean of Conservatory Stuart moves into Cox

Kathryn Stuart, associate dean of the Conservatory, was appointed assistant to President Nancy Dye last month.

"She's somebody with whom I have worked closely with," Dye said. I have enormous respect for her."

Diana Roose, assistant to the President, will work with Stuart in the President's office. "She will do many of the things I've been doing for years," Roose said. Stuart will work with Dye as well as work on a multitude of special projects.

Associate Dean of the Conservatory Ellen Sayles said, "She's a very dear friend and collegue. I'm sorry to have her not close by, but I'm glad she'll still be at the institution."

Senior gift doubled this year

The senior class gift topped $12,000 this year, nearly doubling last year's senior gift.

The increase in fundraising was attributed to the hard work by the fundraising team.

"There was a lot of hustle on our part," senior Brendan Cody, member of the team, said.

The gift will go to the Lorain County Scholarship fund. In order to endow a fund permanently, donors have to give at least $24,000 so the class of 1999 is expected to augment this class gift with its own.

Assistant Director of the Oberlin Fund Deloris Mabins-Adenekan said participation in fundraising remained low this year, despite the larger amount the class raised.

Mabins-Adenekan said this year was on the high side on fundraising and last year was lower compounding the disparity.
