You Can Say that Again

"Jay knows he was wrong and is very sorry he did it. He's a good guy. We all make mistakes, but I know he will learn from this mistake and become a better person."

On a recent spat during a game.

Field hockey senior captain Jesse Robinson was pivotal in the Yeowomen's 2-0 home defeat of Wooster this week. Along with her dominating defense, which helped keep Wooster's offense in check, Robinson scored the game winning goal Wednesday.

IN THE LOCKERROOM WITH...Liesl Strickler

Liesl Strickler, assistant director of major gifts, has coached the women's rugby team for the last three and a half years. Unfortunately for the Rhino Ruggers, Strickler is leaving Oberlin next week after taking a new job as associate director of major gifts at Santa Clara University in California. We decided to chat with her for a few minutes before she sets out with her U-Haul.

When did you start playing rugby?
I started playing rugby when I started college at Carleton.

What made you want to play rugby?
I started playing because I knew a bunch of players on the men's team. They got me to come to winter practices with them, and I loved it. So I started practice with the women in the spring.

So you started playing with men?
Well, sort of. There were a couple more women too.

When did you start to play for the Amazons? (The Amazons are a semi-pro women's rugby team based in Minneapolis.)
My senior year of college I was recruited to play with the Amazons. I kept playing with them for a couple years after I got out of school.

Did the Amazons have good parties?
Laughter. Blush. Yes, they had really good parties. More laughter. OK, this part is off the record ... Yes, they had great parties.

How often did you practice?
We practiced three times a week and had games on Saturdays. We had to travel a lot because there was only one other team in Minneapolis so we flew out to Boston, Washington, lots of places.

Did you have time to do anything else while you played for the Amazons?
I worked, but no, I didn't have time to do anything else.

How many times did you go to nationals with the Amazons?
I went once and we took third place that year.

Are you going to look for a rugby team as soon as you get to California?
No, I think I'll wait for a while and see how much time I have first. There are three teams out there, two of which are really good. I think I might try to play with the Berkeley team, Chaos.

Do you have any words of wisdom for the Rhino Ruggers?
Believe in yourself because you know more than you think you do. Be aggressive and most importantly, have fun.

So, I hear you're going to start surfing when you move to California.
Yeah.

Are you going to wear a leopard-print suit?
No, I think I'll probably wear a wetsuit.
