"Tomorrow I think that Oberlin College will be like the little train that could, chuggin' up the court. I think I can, I think I can."
Senior captain Leigh Ann Totty led the Oberlin women's tennis team in their 6-3 victory in the first match of the season against Malone College last night. Playing in the number-one singles spot, Totty beat Malone's Jocelyn Iwenusa 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. She then teamed up with senior co-captain Tara Sievers as Oberlin's number-one doubles team and dispatched Malone's doubles team of Iwenusa and Jayme Oyster by the count of 8-6. |

I heard you guys won in the first round. How was it?
Man, it was exciting ... everyone was focused and we played like a team. Like a real team.
How's Friday looking?
Friday? The thing with Friday is that we're the underdogs. At Oberlin we're always the underdogs. But people know. In the back of their heads people know that we can take this conference.
So the season has been a fun one?
Oh yeah. This is the first team that is really focused on basketball. We wanna go to the Big Dance.
Got a prediction?
If we assume that we win the conference, then I think we can go to the second round. We could make it to the sweet sixteen with our excitement and energy. It's all up to us.
Up to you?
Not Mike Muska, not Nancy Dye, not our professors, but us. It's up to us.
I know your brother, Shawn, played for Michigan State when they were an NCAA powerhouse. Did he give you any advice about the postseason?
He said, "Regina, you never know what can happen. You just never know." Of course, the Spartans lost to Weaver State Shawn's senior year. Big teams just get to comfortable, so you gotta sneak up on them and bite them in the butt.
I see. Have you been a basketball fan your whole life?
Ever since I could walk. My father put a ball in my hand when I was four.
Your father was a big influence?
Both my parents were coaches and both played in high school. My father played for the Air Force.
Is your family going to the game?
My parents are gonna be there but my brother has a game.
What other interests do you have aside from basketball?
Music. R+B, Jazz, Hip-hop. I also like to sing. I've sung since I was three but I'm still a bit shy about it.
Do you have a favorite artist?
Teena Marie. She was one of the two white females signed by Motown records in the 60s.
Anything else?
I love cats. You know why I love cats? It's because they're sneaky. They're sneaky and smart. They always get what they want. They're watching, patient, and preparing. I'm a cat.
Thanks for the interv....
One more thing. Tomorrow I think that Oberlin College will be like the little train that could, chuggin' up the court. I think I can, I think I can.
