Security Notebook


The following is a compilation of weekly reports from the Office of Safety and Security.

Feb. 24, 2:20 p.m. Employee reported the theft of a pair of eyeglasses from her office desk in Peters Hall. The reading glasses were red in color and were in a green case.

5:33 p.m. Officer responded to a report of two suspicious juveniles riding bicycles, which were taken from the bike rack on the north side of Fairchild, towards South Hall. The juveniles were taken into custody by Oberlin Police Department and charged with bike theft.

Feb. 26, 10:05 a.m. Officer and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm on the second floor of Barnard. A smoke detector in the second floor bathroom was activated by water present in the detector head. Additionally a second floor room detector was found to have been covered with a plastic bag.

10:56 a.m. Officer responded to a report of a student who had cut her thumb opening a can at Keep Co-op kitchen. The student was treated and released at Student Health.

10:56 a.m. Officer responded to a report of a student who could not find her down coat containing her wallet after attending an off-campus party. The student, after checking with friends, located her coat and wallet the next afternoon.

Feb. 27, 1:58 a.m. Officer responded to a report at Allencroft of a student who was ill after consuming alcohol. The student was attended by friends.

4:11 a.m. Officer and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the Photo Domes. A smoke detector was activated by smoke generated from a malfunctioning/overheated ceiling ventilation unit. Smoke and soot present in the Photo Domes was cleaned up by the College employees and students.

Feb. 28, 5:20 p.m. Officer responded to the report of a black tape deck and tape stolen from the Conservatory lounge between 5 p.m. and 5:20 p.m. Witness in the lounge observed a male remove the black tape deck, valued at $35.

7:59 p.m. Officer responded to a room smoke detector alarm in South Hall. The alarm was activated because of a malfunctioning smoke detector.

Mar. 1, 1:20 p.m. Student reported the theft of her wallet from her practice room in Robertson. The wallet, which had been left unattended in the practice room, was described as black leather, valued at $20, and contained $5 to $10 in cash and a pre-paid phone card.

11:07 p.m. Officer responded to a report that over the weekend, a small fire had occurred in a student's room at Old Barrows and the smoke detector did not activate. Paper exiting a printer had fallen on a nearby candle, causing flames. The fire was extinguished and there was no damage to the room. A work order was placed for the repair of the malfunctioning smoke detector.

Mar. 2, 5:12 p.m. Officer responded to the report of a stolen wallet from Wilder DeCafe. The wallet had been recovered and turned in to the cashier by an unknown person, then later turned up missing. The wallet was blue nylon with a velcro closure and contained a Vermont driver's license, credit card, miscellaneous cards and approximately $60 to $80 in cash.
