Security Notebook


The following is a compilation of weekly reports from the Office of Safety and Security.

Aug. 28, 1:30 p.m. An officer responded to a report made by a staff member that a Leatherman combination tool, valued at $40 and a small screwdriver, valued at $2 were taken from work clothing. The work clothes were left hanging in the Central Heating Plant outside a locker at 3:30 p.m. on August 27, 1999 and upon the employee's return to work the tool case was found on the floor and the tools gone.

Aug. 27, 4:45 p.m. An officer responded to a report from a resident of East Hall that her Aiwa stereo was missing. The student called on August 29, at 2:29 p.m. to report the missing stereo was found.

Aug. 28, 8:30 p.m. An officer responded to a report from a faculty member of the theft of a Sony Digital camera from an office in Peters Hall. The camera was silver with a view screen, and displayed a Kenyon College Ohio 5 Group sticker and serial number on the back. Its value is estimated at $1000. The camera was locked in the office on Friday evening, but discovered missing Saturday afternoon. Nothing else was disturbed in his office. Oberlin Police Department is investigating the theft.

Aug. 29, 11:24 p.m. An officer transported a resident of Zechiel to Allen Memorial Hospital. The student reported he was playing basketball at Philips Gym when his shoulder popped out of place.

Aug. 28, 7:03 p.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm on the second floor, of Peters. No cause for the alarm was found.

Aug. 29, 12:03 a.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm on the third floor west of Dascomb.The pull station by the stairwell was activated.

Aug. 30, 9:19 p.m. An officer responded to a resident of Price who reported her book-bag missing from the Feve between 7:45 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on August 30, 1999. The bookbag contained a Visa card, receipts, room key, bank card, mailbox access, college ID, course registration catalog, glasses, $20 cash in a wallet and $50 in an envelope.

Aug. 30, 11:09 p.m. An officer responded to a resident of East Hall who reported someone was turning her doorknob trying to gain entry into her room at East Hall on Sunday, August 29,1999 at approximately 5 a.m. The student said she was awaken by the sound of the turning doorknob, then saw two feet at the base of the door.

Aug. 31, 3:16 p.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in the Asia House basement. Smoke and heat from cooking food activated the alarm.
