Board of Trustees meet to discuss internal items and Science Center

The Board of Trustees met for the first time this year over the weekend with new chairman Thomas Klutznick, OC '61

The meeting was workshop- based, focusing on the structure of the board as well as the College. They discussed streamlining the body and to see if any reorganization of its committees would be necessary.

The trustees spent time looking at long range planning for the College along with other immediate issues.

"The board is very focused on longer range institutional strategies to build on the strengths of Oberlin," said Clayton Koppes, dean of the college of arts and sciences, who attended part of the meeting.

An outside consultant met with the board last Friday to discuss the Capital Campaign. The board also approved the general contractor and budget for the new Science Center.

Oberlin to be backdrop for NBC affiliate feature

The Oberlin College Heisman Club room will serve as the filming location for an upcoming edition of a weekly mini-documentary produced by Cleveland NBC affiliate WKYC.

The segment, entitled 'Embracing the Past', highlights a different unusual facet of the Cleveland Browns professional football club's history each week. This segment will air Sunday, Oct. 17.

The Browns now feature two former recipients of the Heisman: quarterback Ty Detmer and their recent acquisition, Rashaam Salaam.

Dennis Goulden, a producer and director for WKYC, said that the fact that two Heisman trophy winners were together on the Browns got him thinking.

"I was sitting in the lockeroom, and I wondered how many Heisman winners there have been on the Browns," said Goulden.

It turns out there have been seven winners of the Heisman in the history of the Browns. That high number, roughly 10 percent of all of the trophy winners, prompted Goulden to propose a segment which will be produced in the coming week.

Oberlin College was selected as the filming site because it was where John Heisman first coached football. The Heisman Club room was named in honor of him. The close proximity of Cleveland and the Browns also played a part in deciding that Oberlin would be the location of the shoot.
