You Can Say that Again

"I run for team glory, and for the feeling I get when I hammer an opponent into the ground in the last 400 meters of a race."

-Hans Petersen,
sophomore cross-country runner
In response to the question, 'Why do you run?'

The sophomore spikers were instrumental in their team's victories last weekend which stopped an 11-game skid.

The two combined for well over half of Oberlin's kills in defeats of Montclair and Susquehanna Universities. Kenmore tallied 18 kills against Montclair and 17 against Susquy, while Ruth notched 15 and 19 respectively.

IN THE LOCKERROOM WITH... Apryl Wynn and Emily Lane

Sophomore Apryl and junior Emily are the co-captains of Oberlin's cheerleading squad, a group some students on campus may not even know exists. Its leaders sat down with us to talk a bit about the group and the cheer it brings to all.

Some people were suprised to hear we have a cheerleading squad. When was it formed?
EL: The squad was started by and put together by Apryl Wynn last January during Winter term.

How big a squad do you currently have?
EL: We currently have 11 members, though only seven have been cheering at games. We should have eight or nine out there this week and hope to add more for basketball season.
AW: If anyone out there is interested please contact us at Oberlincheerleading@hotmail.com.We would be glad to have you.

What games have you cheered at?
AW: We have cheered at all the home football games. EL: So far we have only cheered at the home football games, but we will also be cheering at all the home basketball games, both men's and women's.

The Denver Broncos are having a very poor season, and injuries just keep piling up. If the cheerleading team were to join the Broncos, how do you think things would change?
AW: All we do is try to get the crowd pumped up and from there the players get pumped. I think that is all we could do for the Broncos - keep up the spirit.

How have the Oberlin players, coaches and the fans responded?
AW: The football coaches have been wonderful. Everyone - especially Coach Ramsey - has supported us. And the basketball coaches say that they are looking forward to us cheering for them. EL: The football players were a little wary at first; they didn't want us to embarrass them by making fools of ourselves. But once they saw that we are for real and are good, they came around and enjoy the support. The fans have been great, very complimentary.

Do you feel the cheerleaders can help encourage more spirit towards athletics here at Oberlin?
AW: Yes, I think when the fans see that we cheer no matter what, even though they do not feel like it, they cheer with us also. EL: I hope that we can encourage school spirit on this campus and bring more people to sporting events to support the teams. All OC athletes deserve more support and respect than they get for all the effort they put in.

Last game, Dan Blackburn was the only male cheerleader. Why do you think guys might not join?
AW: I think that, traditionally, cheerleading is a female thing. I think that guys don't join for the same reason that we have trouble finding women - school spirit is not very important at Oberlin. EL: I think that prospective recruits might shy away from cheerleading because they don't want to be made fun of, which is a reality. Dan is great, and we need more guys like him so we can do more stunts.

Our obligatory movie question: Can you think of a film where cheerleaders or a cheerleader figure prominently, and what was your impression of the film?
EL: Oh gee, the only movies I can think of that have cheerleaders are maybe in Heathers or Varsity Blues, neither of which I think portray them positively, but I'll have to defer to Apryl on that one. AW: No, I do not know any films.

Anything else?
EL: Thanks for the interview! Come support the guys at the football game Saturday against the Wooster Scots!
