You Can Say that Again

"I didn't eat or sleep for three days prior to the tournament."

-senior Adam Fuller,
Member of Mr. Jeff and the Distroyers, intramural bowling club
On his preparation for the ACUI bowling tournament, held at Kent State.

The junior took home first place finishes in both the 400m dash and the long jump at last Friday's Greater Cleveland College's Meet at Baldwin-Wallace. 'The Rocket' is currently ranked third in both events in the NCAC.

Chandler was also a member of the 4x200 relay which placed second at the meet and is currently tops in the conference.

Marquee Event

Distance runners do it longer, throwers push it harder and jumpers do it in the dirt. You can watch all the fun at the Heisman field house as Oberlin takes to the track for its last indoor home meet. Field events start at 6 p.m., running events at 7:30.

IN THE LOCKERROOM WITH...Jon Stoper

This senior has a dream: to become the holder of the Oberlin record for most intramural sports played in a semester. He is currently a member of the raquetball, table-tennis, and two different bowling leagues, and he plans to participate in both flag football and softball second module. He gave us his thoughts on sports, life and politics.

Is this an official record?
I have no idea. I doubt there is a record, but I will establish it.

The question on everyone's lips: Why?
I'm basically just doing this for fun. It's not like I'm doing this to set the record. Also, it's my last semester and I'd like to go out with a bang. You might say I'm a sports junkie.

Do you have a favorite sport out of the six?
Bowling is probably the sport I'm best at, but I really enjoy the competition of table-tennis the most.

Do you feel your succes in this endeavor will have a positive impact on the world as a whole?
Absolutely not.

How are your academics holding up with all these physical comitments?
It's my last semester and luckily I took a lot of credits freshman year - I'm only taking 12 [now]. I still put academics number one.

Who do you like in the upcoming presidential election?
Al Gore, because I hear he's a really good basketball player.

You do realize that's Bill Bradley...
Oh yeah, he used to be a pro, didn't he? Change my answer. I remember hearing that Gore twisted his ankle playing basketball a couple of years ago.

Is all this a cheap ploy to get an intramural champions t-shirt?
That's what I'm hoping to do. I won one last year for softball. I could use as many as I can get so I don't have to do laundry as often.

Anything else?
I used to have the goal of trying to learn how to play every sport at least decently well, but I realized some sports are just too archaic. I don't think I'll ever be able to do curling.

What are they talking about?

This week...

'Taper'

Sport: Any of them, but primarily swimming and track

What it means: As a season progresses, workouts have decreasing positive impact on the athletes' development, and eventually can begin to sap energy and increase the likelihood of injury. To counter this, athletes will often progressively lessen the intensity of workouts in the later weeks of the season.
