News BriefsLa Alianza Latina To Honor Indigenous Peoples Monday"In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue...," but this year La Alianza Latina wants Oberlin students to honor the truth. In lieu of the controversial holiday devoted to Christopher Columbus, the American Indian Council, La Alianza Latina, and the MRC are organizing an Indigenous People's Weekend. Dia De La Raza is "a day dedicated to indegenious people and not Christopher Columbus," said Maria Victoria Albina, co-chair of La Alianza Latina. Saturday at Third World House, there will be a dinner celebrating Dia De La Raza hosted by La Alianza Latina. Associate Professor of History Pablo Mitchell will appear as a guest speaker. The dinner is at 6 p.m. Albina said that "there will be super yummy catered food." Tickets are three dollars and available at the Multicultural Resource Center in Wilder.
ACLU Hosts Event to Educate Community on Civil RightsNext Tuesday, Oct. 10, the North Central Ohio Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union will hold an event designed to educate the community on its rights when protesting. Ray Vasvari, Legal Director for the ACLU of Ohio, will speak about how to receive the full protection of the law when protesting. Suzanne Walsh, attorney and ACLU of Ohio board member, will speak about how these issues are important in a period of conflict, and how to get community voices heard effectively. The ACLU of Ohio says that one of its goals is proactive community education, and this is a key to citizens exercising constitutional rights. "First Amendment rights to assemble and speak are some of the most cherished rights, and they must be defended and exercised wisely in order to resolve conflicts and create a just society," ACLU of Ohio Executive Director Chris Link said. The event is free and open to the public.
